Families flock to indoor waterpark resorts for good reasons. They offer waterpark playtime year-round, cater to kids, and provide a destination that’s far more than a typical hotel. With three kids, we love checking into waterpark resorts, and our experience ranges from coast to coast. There are major differences when comparing OKANA vs. Great Wolf Lodge, and I’m laying them out so you can make an informed decision.

Location Might Be Your First Deciding Factor
Great Wolf Lodge’s first location in Wisconsin Dells opened its doors in 1997. Today, they have 23 locations across the U.S. OKANA sits in Oklahoma City, opening its doors in 2025, just minutes away from the Will Rogers International Airport. Great Wolf wins with more locations, but each location varies in size and the number of attractions.
OKANA offers a massive arcade area, complete with two-story laser tag, and while Great Wolf Lodge locations also have an arcade, it’s typically much smaller. Newer GWL locations offer indoor ropes courses instead.
Our Atlanta Great Wolf Lodge location is just an hour from our home, but we flew from Atlanta to Oklahoma City, just for OKANA. Between the epic outdoor lagoon with a beach, indoor waterpark, five on-site restaurants, and expansive arcade area, OKANA is worth the flight. Sitting in the center of the U.S., it might be worth a flight for you.

Waterpark Attractions At OKANA vs. Great Wolf Lodge
Of the numerous Great Wolf Lodge locations I’ve been to, most don’t have an outdoor waterpark area and only offer the indoor waterpark. There’s more Great Wolf Lodge value with their newer resorts, and some now offer outdoor pools.
Quite the contrary, the outdoor areas at OKANA shine just as much as their indoor waterpark. My five-year-old played at OKANA Beach, where the lagoon is the 4th-largest pool in the U.S., there’s a swim-up bar for adults, and multiple obstacle-style attractions for kids to tackle. OKANA opens its outdoor areas around mid-May yearly. Consider the time of year you’re planning the family’s waterpark vacation.

OKANA Attracts More Than Families
It’s easy to say that families come first when comparing OKANA and Great Wolf Lodge, and both brands prioritize families as their primary customers. Surprisingly, OKANA also includes so many adult-only spaces (something that is lacking at Great Wolf Lodge properties). It’s not uncommon to see girls’ weekends or bachelorette parties at OKANA.
OKANA Adults-Only Areas (ages 21+):
- Cabana Cove Sunbathing Pool
- Okasis Swim-Up Bar
- Outdoor and Indoor Adults-only Cabana Rentals
- Bullseye (dining and entertainment) 21+ after 9 pm
- The Spa at Okana (18+ treatments include massages, facials and body therapies)
- Multiple Bars at OKANA Dining Locations

OKANA vs. Great Wolf Lodge Dining
I always tell people that Great Wolf Lodge feels like a two-night stay because there aren’t many dining options at most locations. After a few days, you’ve maxed out the dining options at Great Wolf Lodge. Both waterpark resorts offer a variety of dining styles, from sit-down table service to quick poolside bites. Great Wolf Lodge dining has perfected its food allergy training, while OKANA is still in its infancy, and I didn’t notice many allergy-friendly options.
Our family doesn’t have food allergy concerns, and I greatly appreciated the number of restaurants on the OKANA property. For us, that’s a difference between booking a two-night stay and adding on more nights. Both Great Wolf Lodge and OKANA are designed so families don’t need to leave for food, but the variety at OKANA wins.
From Tex-Mex to BBQ and even a gastropub, there are so many options at OKANA. If you want to pass on poolside fried foods, opt for poolside ramen noodles instead. Choose from a breakfast buffet or grab a quick bite at the coffee shop. Dining at OKANA doesn’t feel like an afterthought.

Final Thoughts On The Indoor Waterpark Resort Battle
Great Wolf Lodge opened its doors, so resorts like OKANA could optimize the idea. While there are many Great Wolf locations, they’re truly not equal. I suggest reviewing the specific location and its amenities before booking. But if you’re wondering about flying across the country, to OKANA, I can hands-down say it’s worth it. OKANA added luxury to the indoor waterpark concept, creating a unique entertainment destination that appeals to more than just families.
