7 Must-Do Events at Macon’s International Cherry Blossom Festival

Last Updated on February 23, 2026 by Kimberly Stroh

Every spring, Macon turns pink thanks to the blooms of more than 300,000 Yoshino cherry trees, transforming the city into a dreamy sea of soft petals and Southern charm. Macon proudly calls itself the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World, and during the International Cherry Blossom Festival, the entire community comes alive with parades, concerts, food, and family-friendly fun.

Macon International Cherry Blossom Festival Tips

With so many events packed into a few vibrant days, it can be hard to choose where to start. These seven must-do highlights capture the heart of the festival and guarantee you will experience the very best of Macon in full bloom.

1. The Adorable Wiener Dog Race You Can’t Miss

One of the quirkier events at the Cherry Blossom Festival is the Wiener Dog Race. It’s chock full of events, but this race tops the list for being the cutest. Watch Dachshunds dash downtown on Cherry Street to compete for the distinguished title of “Fastest Wiener Dog in Middle Georgia.” This crowd-favorite event draws cheering spectators who line the course to watch dozens of determined (and delightfully distracted) dachshunds dash toward the finish line. Kids absolutely love it!

Pro Festival Tip: Arrive early for a good viewing spot and bring your camera. Between the pink blooms overhead and the parade of tiny racing pups, you will capture some great shots.

2. Live Entertainment at Carolyn Crayton Park

Carolyn Crayton Park is the central festival hub in Macon. It transforms into a lively outdoor celebration during the International Cherry Blossom Festival, featuring live music, performances, and activities throughout the day.

You’ll find everything from local bands and regional artists to dance groups and community performances taking the stage. The atmosphere feels like a giant neighborhood party under the pink canopy of blossoms. Vendors line the park serving up classic fair favorites like funnel cakes, corn dogs, and fresh-squeezed lemonade alongside barbecue, kettle corn, and sweet treats inspired by the cherry blossom theme.

3. Lantern Light Tour at Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park

My favorite festival activity is the Lantern Light Tour at Ocmulgee Mounds Historical Park. It’s exclusive to the festival and doesn’t occur at any other time throughout the year. As dusk settles in, guests walk softly lit paths guided by lantern glow, exploring one of the Southeast’s most significant Native American cultural sites beneath the evening sky.

The ancient earthworks, including the Great Temple Mound, stand silhouetted in the fading light, creating a powerful and reflective atmosphere that feels far removed from the daytime festival excitement. Along the way, park interpreters share stories of the Indigenous peoples who built and lived among these mounds thousands of years ago, adding depth and meaning to the experience. I love the nighttime skyline view of downtown Macon, too.

Pro Festival Tip: Wear comfortable athletic shoes for the Lantern Light Tour. There’s a significant amount of walking on unpaved pathways.

4. Run Under the Blooms: Cherry Blossom Road Race 5K

The Cherry Blossom Road Race 5K is one of the most scenic (and healthiest) ways to experience the International Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon. Runners and walkers make their way through streets lined with soft pink Yoshino cherry trees, creating a picture-perfect backdrop that feels almost unreal. Whether you are racing for a personal best or simply jogging with friends, the atmosphere is full of community spirit. It is a beautiful way to kick off a festival day.

Pro Festival Tip: For early mornings and close proximity, stay at Macon’s Hotel Forty Five. It’s downtown, making it a prime location for festival attendees.

5. The Cherry Blossom Parade

The Cherry Blossom Parade is one of the most anticipated traditions of the International Cherry Blossom Festival. Families line the streets of Macon for a celebration full of color and hometown pride. Elaborate floats decorated in pink, marching bands filling the air with music, dance teams, community groups, and festive performers create a fun atmosphere from start to finish.

Kids line the sidewalks hoping for candy and high fives, while parents soak in that classic small-town parade charm. It is the kind of event where you bring a folding chair and wave at every float.

6. Shop, Sip, and Stroll at Cherry Market

The Cherry Market is a must-visit spot for festival-goers looking to experience the local artisans. This open-air market brings together local artists, food vendors, and makers offering everything from handmade crafts and jewelry to unique gifts and festival-themed treats.

As you stroll through the colorful booths, you can sip on cherry-inspired drinks, sample fresh local foods, and discover treasures to take home. It is a perfect stop for shoppers, foodies, and anyone who loves exploring a vibrant outdoor market under the blooms.

7. Family Fun and Festivities at Third Street Park

Third Street Park is a lively hub of family-friendly fun during the International Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon. The park comes alive with games, interactive activities, and entertainment designed for all ages, making it a favorite stop for families with kids. From face painting and carnival-style games to live performances and hands-on crafts, there is always something to keep everyone engaged. Don’t miss opportunities for free ice cream and Coke samples! It’s a favorite hangout spot for kids.
