When you’re cooking for an event, whether it’s a party or a holiday, you want a recipe that you can make ahead of time. They just make life so much easier. These tortilla pinwheels are full of flavor. They’ve got a cream cheese base with cheddar cheese, green chilis, green onions, and olives. You mix everything together, roll them up, and refrigerate. I wrap them in plastic wrap and keep them whole until it’s time to serve. Then, you can cut them into bite-size pieces and serve with your favorite salsa.

Looking for even more great appetizers? Pinwheels are classic appetizers that can be prepped ahead of time. These are my favorite pinwheel recipes on Savvy Mama Lifestyle:

What Are Green Chili Tortilla Pinwheels?

Green Chili Tortilla Pinwheels are an easy cold appetizer made with flour tortillas filled with a creamy mixture of cream cheese, cheddar cheese, diced green chiles, green onions, and black olives. Roll the tortillas, chill, then slice into bite-sized pieces before serving.

These creamy tortilla pinwheels have a mild Tex-Mex flavor and are especially convenient because they can be prepared ahead of time. Serve them with salsa for an easy party appetizer, game day snack, or potluck dish.

Green Chili Tortilla Pinwheels Ingredient List:

  • Cream Cheese: Cream cheese creates the creamy base that holds the filling ingredients together.
  • Canned Green Chiles: Green chiles add a mild Tex-Mex flavor and a hint of spice.
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese: Cheddar adds a savory flavor and extra cheesiness to every bite.
  • Chopped Black Olives: Chopped black olives add a salty, savory flavor that complements the cheese mixture.
  • Green Onions: Green onions add a fresh flavor and a little crunch to the creamy filling.
  • Buritto-Size Flour Tortillas: Large tortillas provide plenty of room for spreading the filling and creating tightly rolled pinwheels.
  • Salsa for Dipping: Salsa is optional, but it makes an easy dipping sauce for serving.

Tips For Making Green Chili Tortilla Pinwheels

These are stupid and easy to make. A cook of any level can throw these pinwheels together for a quick appetizer. You’ll need a large mixing bowl and a large spoon. All you’re doing is mixing together the filling ingredients and rolling the tortillas. Be sure you’re using burrito-sized tortillas so there’s plenty of room to roll!

When To Make Green Chili Tortilla Pinwheels

Parties are the perfect time to showcase appetizers. I’ll share how to make these pinwheels ahead of time so you can just enjoy your gathering. Make these Green Chili Tortilla Pinwheels for game day, baby showers, bridal showers, tailgating, and pool parties. If it’s an outside event, the pinwheels need to be enjoyed immediately and can’t stay out in the heat (due to the cream cheese).

How To Prep Your Pinwheels Ahead Of Time

Make these pinwheels up to 24 hours ahead of time. Once the tortillas have been rolled, wrap them in plastic wrap. Store them in the refrigerator ahead of time. Do not cut the pinwheels yet. Once you’re ready to serve them, use a serrated knife to slice them into 1-inch pieces. Serve them immediately.

How To Store Leftovers

Any leftovers can be transferred to an airtight food storage container. Keep the leftovers in the refrigerator. For the best freshness, enjoy the pinwheels within 5-6 days of making them. Just pull them from the refrigerator and immediately eat the leftovers – there’s no need to let the pinwheels thaw.

Sadly, pinwheels don’t freeze well. The tortillas will be soggy and lose their texture once they thaw from the freezer. I just make a whole new batch and avoid freezing them.

What to Serve With Tortilla Pinwheels

These creamy pinwheels pair well with a variety of easy party foods. Create a complete appetizer spread by serving them alongside:

  • Salsa and tortilla chips
  • Guacamole
  • Queso dip
  • Chicken wings
  • Loaded potato skins
  • Buffalo chicken dip
  • Cheese dip
  • Fresh vegetable trays
  • Meatballs
  • Other cold pinwheel appetizers

For an easy game day spread, choose a combination of hot appetizers, cold snacks, dips, and bite-sized foods so guests have plenty of options.

Easy Tortilla Pinwheel Variations

  • Make them spicy: Add diced jalapeños or a pinch of cayenne pepper to the cream cheese mixture.
  • Add protein: Mix in finely chopped cooked chicken, ham, or crispy bacon.
  • Try a different cheese: Use Monterey Jack, pepper jack, or a Mexican cheese blend instead of cheddar.
  • Add more Tex-Mex flavor: Mix in taco seasoning or finely chopped cilantro.
  • Leave out the olives: If your family does not enjoy black olives, simply omit them from the filling.
  • Use flavored tortillas: Try spinach, tomato, or other flavored flour tortillas for additional color and flavor.
