DIY Cocomelon Halloween Costume

We absolutely love watching Netflix’s hit children’s television show, Cocomelon, in our home. If your little one loves to sing and dance while watching the show, then dress them up in this adorable DIY Cocomelon Halloween Costume this fall! The costume is inspired by the show’s main character, JJ, and his oh-so-cute pajamas. I’ve got all of the step-by-step directions you need to put this costume together in a few hours.

How to make your own DIY Cocomelon Halloween Costume for babies or toddlers.

I promise you that I am NOT a crafty person at all. Occasionally, I throw together some hit crafty pieces – like my no-carve Bluey Pumpkin – and other moms are thankful for the easy ideas. Anyone can make this DIY Cocomelon Costume and it comes together pretty quickly. The hardest part is waiting for the paint to dry before moving onto the next step.

You can make this costume for any baby or toddler (they’re the main target demographic of the show). Just size the base onesie off of the size that they’ll be for Halloween. Keep in mind that it might stretch. It’s only for one night though – so you don’t have to worry much about it being perfect.

Most of the materials you need for this project can be found in a big box store, like Walmart, or a craft store. I’m also adding all of the Amazon links to products below so it’s easier shopping on you! If you’re crafty on a regular basis, you might even have these materials in your home already.

Multi-Surface Paint vs. Fabric Paint

I designed the costume for one night use. I know my child is going to wear the onesie for Halloween evening and probably never wear it again. I chose to use multi-surface paints because they’re more budget-friendly. However, they won’t survive a washing machine run. If you want your paint to stand the test of time, purchase fabric paints! It’s up to you and how long they’ll use the costume.

How To Speed Up The Craft Process

Like I mentioned previously, the hardest part of making this costume is the waiting for paint to dry. Speed up the process by using a hair dryer. Keep the stencil on the whale and hold the end of the hair dryer close to the fabric. Use it for 2-3 minutes on each whale. Once it’s dried, you can pull up the stencil.

Why Aren’t There Pants To The DIY Cocomelon Costume?

Listen – if you can find matching teal paints or a plain long sleeve footed teal pajama – then you are doing better than me! I couldn’t find it when I made this costume. I’m pairing his Cocomelon Halloween Costume with gray sweatpants or jeans. It doesn’t bother me at all. If you find footed long sleeve teal pajamas, then use those by all means. You can even paint the bottom of the feet yellow for a true JJ look!

Step-By-Step Directions To Make JJ Cocomelon Halloween Costume

Start by working on a flat surface. Place a piece of cardboard or paper between the layer of the onesie to prevent paint from leaking through to the other side.

Next, place two lines of painter’s tape down the center of the neckline and a piece on the bottom. Use the light blue paint to create JJ’s collar and a blue stripe down the middle. Let it dry completely.

Making the light blue collar on onesie

Plan on where you will place your whale designs. You’ll do some in the dark blue paint and some in the yellow paint. Start by securing the whale stencil with several pieces of painter’s tape along the outside.

Carefully paint the inside of the whale stencil with either yellow or dark blue paint. Wait for the paint to dry completely before removing the stencil.

Painting the whales using a stencil

Repeat the process until you’ve painted whales along the front of the onesie and the sleeves (optional to do the back).

Once all of the whales are dried, use your yellow paint to make the “button” at the center of the collar – over the light blue paint. Let it dry.

Lastly, make an “X” with the light blue sharpie over the yellow circle you painted to finish your JJ Cocomelon Halloween Costume!
