I love Southern recipes. They’re homegrown, genuinely good-tasting, and they’re usually easy. If you make this Texas Trash Pie a few times, you’ll have the recipe memorized because it’s so simple. Texas Trash Pie is a dump-and-bake type of pie, and the texture is divine. It has a cookie-like texture with plenty of sweet and salty flavor. If you’re a snacker, this pie is for you!

The first time I made this recipe, I knew it had to be good based on the ingredients. The sweet-and-salty palette caught my attention. Texas Trash Pie has crushed pretzels, graham crackers, coconut, pecans, chocolate chips, and caramel. Surprisingly, there are no eggs in this pie! Sweetened condensed milk and butter bind all of the ingredients together.

What Is Texas Trash Pie?

Texas Trash Pie is a sweet and salty dessert made by combining a variety of crunchy, chewy, and chocolatey ingredients in a pie crust. The filling typically includes chocolate chips, crushed pretzels, graham crackers, shredded coconut, pecans, caramel, butter, and sweetened condensed milk.
The ingredients are mixed together and baked until the pie is golden brown and the filling has set. The result is a rich, gooey dessert with a texture that is somewhere between a cookie, candy bar, and traditional pie.
Despite its unusual name, there is nothing “trashy” about the flavor. The name refers to the combination of several different ingredients mixed together in one delicious dessert.
Quick answer: Texas Trash Pie is a sweet and salty pie made with chocolate, pretzels, graham crackers, coconut, pecans, caramel, butter, and sweetened condensed milk.
Kitchen Tools You’ll Need
For this pie, you’ll need a 9-inch pie-baking dish. I used a Pillsbury roll-out pie crust. Or you can take the shortcut by using a frozen pie crust. I’ve made it both ways, and it turns out great every time. If you’re a pie snob and want to make your own homemade pie crust, that’s ok too!
Texas Trash Pie Ingredients:
- Chocolate chips: Chocolate adds sweetness and creates pockets of melted chocolate throughout the pie.
- Crushed pretzels: Pretzels provide the salty, crunchy element that balances the sweetness of the other ingredients.
- Graham crackers: Crushed graham crackers add a slightly sweet crunch and help create the cookie-like texture of the filling.
- Shredded coconut: Coconut adds chewiness and a subtle sweetness.
- Pecan pieces: Pecans bring a buttery, nutty flavor and additional crunch.
- Caramel bits: Caramel creates gooey pockets throughout the pie as it bakes.
- Sweetened condensed milk: This ingredient acts as a binder for the filling while adding a rich, sweet flavor.
- Melted butter: Butter adds richness and helps bring all of the ingredients together.
- Pie crust: A prepared pie crust makes this recipe easy, but you can also use a homemade pie crust if you prefer.
I know, the name is weird – right? The original pie is from Round Top, Texas. The pie was created by the Royer family, owners of Royers Round Top Café. The restaurant has been open for over 35 years, and they’re famous for pies. I haven’t visited the cafe yet, but I’m sure all their food is outstanding.

What To Serve With This Pie
Vanilla ice cream is sensational with Texas Trash Pie. The ooey gooey texture of the pie is really great with the smooth ice cream. They contrast each other nicely. Chocolate ice cream works as well, or homemade whipped cream. If you’re serving guests, I like to make a fresh pot of coffee to go along with dessert.
Can You Freeze Texas Trash Pie?
Yes! This pie is so great for freezing. Freeze the pie for up to three months. Store the pie in the back of the freezer where temperatures are more stable. Let the pie thaw for several hours before serving again.

Can you make this without coconut?

Yes! I’d use 1/4 cup extra pretzel to replace that coconut. It’ll still be awesome.

I have a question. Is it 1 cup of crushed graham crackers, or 1 cup of graham crackers, crushed. There is a big difference. Same question applies to the pretzels. I'm presuming you meant 1 cup of crushed graham crackers, but if I'm wrong let me know.

Very good question! I’ll make that edit. It’s one cup AFTER it’s been crushed. For both the graham crackers and pretzels. Thank you for asking!
