I love Southern recipes. They’re homegrown, genuinely good tasting, and they’re usually easy. If you make this Texas Trash Pie a few times, you’ll have the recipe memorized because it’s so simple. Texas Trash Pie is a dump-and-bake type of pie, and the texture is divine. It has the texture of a cookie with plenty of sweet and salty flavors. If you’re a snacker, this pie is for you!
The first time I made this recipe, I knew it had to be good based on the ingredients. The sweet and salty palette caught my attention. Texas Trash Pie has crushed pretzels, graham crackers, coconut, pecans, chocolate chips, and caramel. Surprisingly, there are no eggs in this pie! Sweetened condensed milk and butter bind all of the ingredients together.

Texas Trash Pie Is The Sweet & Salty Dessert You’ll Love
For this pie, you’ll need a 9-inch pie-baking dish. I used a Pillsbury roll-out pie crust. Or you can take the shortcut by using a frozen pie crust. I’ve made it both ways, and it turns out great every time. If you’re a pie snob and want to make your own homemade pie crust, that’s ok too!
The History of Texas Trash Pie
I know, the name is weird – right? The original pie is from Round Top, Texas. The pie was created by the Royer family, owners of Royers Round Top Café. The restaurant has been open for over 35 years, and they’re famous for pies. I’ve yet to go visit the cafe, but I’m certain all of their food is outstanding.
When To Make This Pie
I don’t think of Texas Trash Pie as a seasonal pie. I have made it for Thanksgiving, just to make something different. It’s also great during the summertime. I think the sweet and salty flavors can be enjoyed at any time of the year. It only takes 35 minutes to bake, and it’s super easy to dump all the ingredients and mix.
The pie can be made one day ahead of an event. I make it the night before a holiday, and it’s great the next day. All of the ingredients are set by then!
What To Serve With This Pie
Vanilla ice cream is sensational with Texas Trash Pie. The ooey gooey texture of the pie is really great with the smooth ice cream. They contrast each other nicely. Chocolate ice cream works as well, or homemade whipped cream. If you’re serving guests, I like to make a fresh pot of coffee to go along with dessert.
Can You Freeze Texas Trash Pie?
Yes! This pie is so great for freezing. Freeze the pie for up to three months. Store the pie in the back of the freezer where temperatures are more stable. Let the pie thaw for several hours before serving again.
Directions To Make Texas Trash Pie
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Crush the pretzels until they’re smaller pieces and dump them into a medium mixing bowl.
Add all the remaining filling ingredients: chocolate chips, pretzels, graham crackers, coconut, pecans, caramel bits.
Next, add in the sweetened condensed milk and the melted butter. Mix well.
Pour the entire filling into a frozen pie crust.
Bake the pie for 35 minutes until the top is golden brown. Let the pie cool completely to set. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream.

- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 1 cup pretzels, crushed
- 1 cup graham crackers, crushed
- 1 cup shredded coconut
- 1 cup pecan pieces
- 1 cup caramel bits
- 1 stick (8 Tbsp.) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Crush the pretzels until they're smaller pieces, and dump them into a medium mixing bowl.
- Add all the remaining filling ingredients: chocolate chips, pretzels, graham crackers, coconut, pecans, caramel bits.
- Next, add the sweetened condensed milk and the melted butter. Mix well.
- Pour the entire filling into a frozen pie crust.

Notes
- Measure your pretzels and graham crackers AFTER crushing, so you get a whole 1 cup after crushing.
- If you can't find Kraft Caramel Bits, use the chews and chop them finely.
- If you don't want to use a frozen pie crust, use the Pillsbury refrigerated pie crust to roll-out and crimp the edges.

Can you make this without coconut?

Yes! I’d use 1/4 cup extra pretzel to replace that coconut. It’ll still be awesome.

I have a question. Is it 1 cup of crushed graham crackers, or 1 cup of graham crackers, crushed. There is a big difference. Same question applies to the pretzels. I'm presuming you meant 1 cup of crushed graham crackers, but if I'm wrong let me know.

Very good question! I’ll make that edit. It’s one cup AFTER it’s been crushed. For both the graham crackers and pretzels. Thank you for asking!
