The toddler stage is a peculiar time for young kids and it’s hard to travel during the toddler stage. Finding things to do, that are age-appropriate for toddlers, seems next to impossible when you’re in a city that you’re unfamiliar with. Roanoke, Virginia is home to beautiful mountain views, but it’s also the location of Kids Square – an award-winning children’s museum. Kids Square is floor to ceiling fun with hands-on activities to keep toddlers entertained for hours.

Traveling with my toddler is challenging because I have to find things to do that my older kids will love too. The age gap makes creating a vacation itinerary a bit more challenging. Listed as one of the 11 Things To Do In Roanoke, Virginia That Kids Will Love – it’s easy to see why Kids Square makes it on our must-do Roanoke bucket list. It’s an amazing attraction for toddlers, but kids of all ages will love it, making it a great stop for the siblings too!
3 Reasons To Bring Your Toddler To Kids Square In Roanoke
The children’s museum is located in the Center in the Square building and tickets can be purchased at the box office on the first floor, or online ahead of your visit. Kids Square is just one of six attractions located at this downtown Roanoke building. You can block off a few hours at Kids Square, but I promise your kids will want to stay all day at the children’s museum – so it might be difficult to get to the other attractions (that was our experience).

Interactive & Hands-On Fun For Exploring
With nine total exhibits, there are plenty of spaces for little ones to explore at the museum. Once kids are checked in, with an accompanying adult, they can easily take off on their own and explore the different exhibits. Different corporate sponsors have donated to make each museum exhibit area one-of-a-kind. Kids can fully immerse themselves in different play areas – like working at a bank, veterinarian office or even a hospital. Their imaginations will run wild with all of the pretend play possibilities.
The Different Kids Square Exhibits (subject to change):
- The Town: Kids can Role play as a banker, teacher, cashier, doctor, dentist, vet and more in this kid-sized town
- Tiny Town: Features local restaurants for pretend play
- The Forest: Climb, crawl, hide and play in this playground area
- The Theater: Dress up, act and play in this stage area designed for kids
- Sensory Hallway: Specific area designed for sensory-sensitive children
- Glow Room: Everything kids love about glow-in-the-dark fun

Stress-Free Time For Accompanying Adults
What I love about the children’s museum is the opportunity to watch my toddler play, in an environment that’s stress-free. The museum is completely designed with kids in mind, which makes it a great attraction for parents to take a breather. Watch them play and grow their imaginations, then join in on the fun too!

Kids Square Children’s Museum Is In A Great Location
Kids Square is not only part of the Center in the Square building, but it’s also in a great central downtown Roanoke location. It’s easy to make a full day of visiting the children’s museum or divide your time amongst the other great things to do in the area. The museum has a (paid) parking deck, where you can easily park your car while you explore downtown Roanoke. Scrambled is a great nearby family-friendly breakfast restaurant and the perfect location to kick off your day with the kids.

Check the museum’s event calendar for special seasonal events and rotating exhibits. You never know what you’re going to find at Kids Square, but I promise that your toddler (and siblings) are going to have an awesome time. The only problem is leaving the museum without tears.
