Homemade Kentucky Derby Pie (With Pumpkin Spice Twist)

Last Updated on November 4, 2022 by Kimberly Stroh

I’m not sure what’s more famous, the thoroughbred Kentucky Derby race or the legendary pie that’s named after the race. Many people think of the horses, fancy hats and mint juleps, but I love to daydream about this Kentucky Derby Pie recipe. This version is perfect for Thanksgiving because it has a pumpkin spice twist for a little more flavor of fall. I promise you’re going to love this dessert on your holiday table.

With a Pumpkin Spice twist, this Kentucky Derby Pie is a Thanksgiving dessert favorite! It has chewy texture with chocolate chips, pecans and bourbon. #PumpkinSpice #ThanksgivingPieRecipes #Thanksgiving #ThanksgivingRecipe

The original Kentucky Derby Pie originated at the Melrose Inn, which is located in Prospect, Kentucky. According to experts, the original recipe is a tightly kept secret – and I believe it! So instead of recreating it, I put my own twist on the pie with pumpkin spice bourbon.

It may not be like eating it at the actual Derby, but it’s pretty darn close. The Chocolate and Walnuts create a nice thick filling, while the bourbon gives the pie some kick. If you love the texture of a warm cookie, this is the pie you should try.

I’m all about keeping things simple, especially during the holiday season. I don’t make my own pie crust when I’ve got other things to worry about in the kitchen. Instead, I keep it easy with a store-bought frozen 9-inch pie shell. That way I can throw together the filling and bake it.

What To Serve With Kentucky Derby Pie

Traditionally, you can just enjoy the pie without any toppings at all. I love it with either freshly whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Ice cream is probably the richest one to pick and a bit heavy for after Thanksgiving. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you can even make a Bourbon Whipped Cream that will add even more of a punch. Of course dessert isn’t complete without some freshly brewed coffee as well.

How To Store Leftover Kentucky Derby Pie

If you’ve got leftover Kentucky Derby Pie, just keep it in the pie shell. Cover it with plastic wrap and the pie does not need to be refrigerated. When you’re ready to re-heat the pie, just nuke it in the microwave for a minute. You can also freeze the pie for 2-3 months as well.

What You’ll Need From The Store:

  • Sugar
  • Flour
  • Eggs
  • Sweet Cream Butter
  • Pumpkin Spice Bourbon
  • Pecans
  • Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • Unbaked 9-inch Deep Dish Pie Shell
