Have you ever wanted to step back in time to explore our world? Or maybe dance under dinosaurs to live music? There’s one Atlanta bucket list location where you can do both and more: Located less than a half hour from the downtown area, it’s a must-do destination that offers something for everyone.
Even though I grew up in Atlanta, I’m always excited about a visit to Fernbank. While there are permanent exhibits that we love, there’s always something new and exciting too. I used to take school field trips there, my Husband and I dated at the Fernbank and now we take our kids. For a place that houses artifacts that are thousands of years old, the Fernbank itself never gets old.
5 Can’t Miss Fernbank Museum Experiences
Giants of the Mesozoic: No one can miss the gigantic prehistoric battle that greets guests when they walk into the Fernbank. There are million different angles to photograph these huge dinosaurs from the Mesozoic period. There’s so much wow-factor as you walk around and under the Argentinosaurus and the Giganotosaurus. While it’s an amazing view above, our family loves to look at the details in the rockwork underneath the dinosaurs. Keep an eye out for casts of animals and plants – it’s like a miniature scavenger hunt!
WildWoods and Fernbank Forest: An adventure throughout the trees is located just behind the museum’s main building. It has two miles of winding path throughout 65 acres of forest. Escape to a quiet spot in the shade for some meditation or connect with nature. If you can squeeze a visit in for summer 2019, check out David Rogers’ Big Bugs. My son loves this environmental art that showcases nature’s smallest creatures in a bigger-than-life way.
Fernbank NatureQuest: If you’ve got little ones, this permanent exhibit might be their favorite. NatureQuest is an interactive play area where kids can become scientists and explore the different dimensions of a clubhouse. From the live animal displays, to the hands-on experiences, kids of all ages can explore this area for hours.
The 3D Movies: Learn with off-the-screen fun and excitement when you watch the Fernbank’s lineup of science-based documentaries that are designed for their 3D theater. The four-story screen offers a great film experience that young kids and adults can appreciate. Check their online schedule for updates on new films and showtimes.
Fernbank After Dark: This after-hours experience is one of Atlanta’s best date night activities. Grab a group of friends and explore the Fernbank with an array of after-hour experiences. They have live music, full bars, tapas menus and watch a film in the 3D theater. Dancing to the live music, under the dinosaurs, is still one of the most romantic memories I have from dating my Husband. We love the experience and highly recommend it. They offer seasonal themes and activities change regularly, so you’ve got a unique visit each time. Fernbank After Dark happens on the 2nd Friday of each month.
