This charming mountain town packs plenty of personality, history, outdoor adventure and kid-friendly fun into a small, walkable area.
Spending 48 hours in Bryson City offers a welcome respite from the everyday routine. Our family left feeling refreshed and grounded, reminded of how restorative it can be to slow down, admire nature’s beauty and immerse yourself in a place rich with history. That combination of outdoor adventure and small-town charm is exactly what we look for in a weekend getaway.

Discover Downtown Bryson City
Downtown Bryson City is a charming, walkable mountain town filled with historic buildings, colorful storefronts, locally owned shops, and restaurants. It’s not a stuffy, unapproachable city. Kids are welcome, and families are expected. Its authentic Appalachian character gives the town a welcoming, laid-back personality that makes exploring on foot part of the experience.
One of my favorite things about Bryson City with kids is the convenience of downtown. Park the car and spend a few hours wandering the streets, browsing local shops, grabbing a sweet treat, or enjoying a meal. Its compact layout makes it easy for families to explore at their own pace without constantly getting back in the car.
If you’re looking for free family fun, head to the Swain County Heritage Museum. It’s a worthwhile stop in downtown Bryson City for families who want to understand the area beyond its mountain scenery. The museum shares the story of Swain County through local artifacts and photographs. The museum’s exhibits highlight the region’s Appalachian heritage, Cherokee history, logging, and railroad past.
My kids completed the Swain County Heritage Museum scavenger hunt, which kept them engaged as they learned about the city’s past. It’s the perfect indoor rainy-day activity!
Ride the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad
The highlight of any Bryson City trip with kids is the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. Departing from downtown Bryson City, the historic railroad winds through the mountains, offering families a relaxing way to take in the scenery without having to hike it. The journey combines sweeping mountain views, rivers, forests and small-town landscapes for a quintessential Smoky Mountain experience.
There’s never a bad time to take a ride, but the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad offers special themed rides throughout the year. Day Out With Thomas is perfect for families, catering to young kids with Thomas and Friends, and the Polar Express train ride is sure to bring extra magic to your holiday season.
We kicked off our weekend itinerary with our train ride, making it the highlight of our trip to Bryson City. I recommend blocking out a half day for your GSMRR experience.

Explore the Great Smoky Mountains National Park With Kids
Just a few miles from downtown Bryson City, Deep Creek is one of the most beautiful areas of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and an easy addition to a Bryson City with kids itinerary. Families can hike the 2.4-mile Waterfall Loop, an easy trail that passes three cascading waterfalls: Tom Branch, Indian Creek and Juney Whank Falls. The trail offers a great way to experience the Smokies without committing to a long or strenuous hike.
When the weather is warm, trade your hiking shoes for a tube and float through Deep Creek. Tubing is a relaxing way to cool off while taking in the scenery from the water, and several tubing rental companies are located near the park entrance. It’s an especially fun option for families looking to add a little adventure to their Bryson City family getaway.
Another memorable experience is elk viewing. Elk are often spotted grazing in the fields near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and along the Oconaluftee River Trail. For the best chance of seeing them, plan your visit around dawn or dusk when the elk are most active. Watching these impressive animals in their natural surroundings is a highlight for both kids and adults.
Go Whitewater Rafting in Nantahala National Forest
For families looking to add a little adventure to their itinerary, whitewater rafting in the Nantahala National Forest is an unforgettable experience. The Nantahala River runs through the forest, surrounded by lush mountain scenery, making the journey as scenic as it is exciting. In total, the forest encompasses 530,000 acres of trees.
Several local outfitters offer guided rafting trips, making it easy for families to find an experience that fits their comfort level and ages. Book your trip with Nantahala Outdoor Center before your trip. The Nantahala is known for its family-friendly rafting opportunities, with calm stretches mixed with exciting rapids. Guides handle the navigation while you can focus on enjoying the river and taking in the scenery.
Even if you aren’t ready to get in the raft, the Nantahala River area is worth visiting. Families can watch rafters navigate the rapids, explore the riverfront, and grab a meal nearby.
Pro Tip: If you just want a fantastic roadside view, stop at Pattons Run Overlook inside Nantahala National Forest. It’s located on US-74, and it is a great spot for kids to stretch their legs on the drive into Bryson City. We took a few family photos and watched the rapids.

Where We Stayed in Bryson City NC With Kids
Just a short walk from downtown and offering a comforting space for families, the Calhoun House was perfect for our family of five. We checked into the two-bedroom Tree House suite, which includes ample space to spread out and a full kitchen.
