Last Updated on August 16, 2026 by Kimberly Stroh

Cutest Chocolate Covered Potato Chip Apples are the perfect combination of sweet and salty! These adorable little treats start with crunchy, wavy potato chips that are dipped in red candy melts and decorated to look just like tiny apples.

A pretzel stick makes the perfect apple stem, while a little green candy melt creates the leaf. They’re surprisingly easy to make and are such a fun treat for fall parties, school events, classroom treats, or a fun afternoon in the kitchen with the kids.

The best part? You only need a few ingredients to turn an ordinary bag of potato chips into an adorable chocolate-covered treat everyone will want to try!

Chocolate-Covered Potato Chip Apples for Back to School Snack

What Are Chocolate-Covered Potato Chip Apples?

Chocolate-Covered Potato Chip Apples are a fun, sweet-and-salty treat that turns ordinary wavy potato chips into adorable apple-shaped snacks. Each potato chip is dipped in melted red candy melts, then finished with a pretzel stick stem and a small green chocolate leaf.

The combination of crunchy, salty potato chips and sweet chocolate coating makes these treats surprisingly delicious. The ridges on wavy or ruffle-style chips also add a fun texture and make each one look a little more like an apple. My kids love how they look like apples, and I make them every year when they go back to school! It’s a treat to celebrate going back.

Fun Variations to Try

These Chocolate-Covered Potato Chip Apples are easy to customize, so don’t be afraid to get creative with the colors, toppings, and flavors. The basic recipe gives you adorable little apple-shaped treats, but there are plenty of ways to make them your own.

Try Different Apple Colors:

While red candy melts make classic red apples, you can switch colors to make a variety of apples. Try green candy melts for Granny Smith-inspired apples or yellow candy melts for golden apples. You could even make a combination of red, green, and yellow apples for a fun fall snack platter.

Add Sprinkles:

For an extra festive touch, add sprinkles while the chocolate is still wet. Tiny fall-colored sprinkles, green sprinkles, or even seasonal shapes can add color and texture. Just be sure to add them before the chocolate sets.

How to Make Chocolate-Covered Potato Chip Apples

Start by melting the red chocolate candy melts. Put the candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl, microwave, and warm in 30-second increments until fully melted.

Melting the red candy melts

Dip the potato chips completely in the red melted chocolate, use a fork or clean/ gloved hands to take the chips out of the bowl. Shake off any excess chocolate. Then place it on parchment paper to solidify. About 5-7 minutes

Dipping the potato chip

Next dip the pretzel sticks in the melted red chocolate about 3/4 (3 quarters) of the way. Then turn the solid chocolate covered chips over and place the wet dipped pretzel sticks on the back of the chips. This will be the stem of the apple. Leave them to dry. About 5 minutes.

Dipping the pretzel

Melt the green chocolate candy melts following the same directions as above. Put the chocolate into a piping bag and cut a small hole on the tip of the bag.

Piping the green onto the apple from the piping bag

Turn the chips over to face the front and pipe a small leaf on one side of the chip, at the top next to the stem. To create the leaf, pipe an upside down tear drop. Allow the leaves to dry. About 3 minutes.
