As a mom of a preschooler who adores trains, Day Out With Thomas is a bucket list item. Thomas the Train is a beloved character in our home, and we jumped at the chance to see him in person. The Day Out With Thomas events are nationwide opportunities that include a ride with Thomas, photo opportunities, exclusive merchandise, and memorable location-specific experiences. I’m breaking down what to expect and if it’s worth your money.
What is Day Out With Thomas?
Day Out With Thomas is an event held across the U.S. targeted towards families who are fans of Thomas the Train. Heritage railways host the limited-time event, and each year there is a theme. For the 2025 event, the theme was Thomas’s 80th birthday celebration. The theme for 2026 is Day Out With Thomas: Let’s Rock, Let’s Roll Tour.
Purchase tickets in advance to reserve your spot on the train ride, but plan to arrive early (and possibly stay late) to enjoy the event’s other activities. It’s a rain or shine event, which is not canceled due to weather.
Life-size Percy is much rarer to see and only available at select events. Sadly, we missed out on Percy.

What’s Included With Your Day Out With Thomas Ticket
Our Day Out With Thomas experience was at the historic SAM Shortline Railroad in Cordele, GA. It’s the only moving Georgia State Park experience. All events across the U.S. are comparable in offerings. Our ticket included a 30-minute ride on Thomas, play experiences in the event tents, photo opportunities with life-size Thomas and Sir Topham Hatt, a celebratory certificate and keepsake, plus access to the merchandise tent. They do offer exclusive merchandise at the Day Out With Thomas events.
Although the train rides are at a specific time, guests can arrive as early or stay as late as they wish to take advantage of the other event attractions.

The Best Age Group For Day Out With Thomas
We took my preschooler, who was 4 years old, along with his older siblings and Grandmother. Even though the event is geared towards toddlers and preschoolers, my older kids find it amusing. The train ride is enjoyable for the whole family. Of course, if you’re also a fan of Thomas, regardless of your age, you’re going to enjoy this event, and it’s worth experiencing. Kids under 1 are free, but required to sit on a parent’s lap.

What To Bring With You:
- Digital copy of your tickets
- Wear athletic shoes
- Bring rain-friendly layers since it’s rain or shine
- Tap-friendly card for merchandise
How To Score Discounted Tickets
Day Out With Thomas is heavily advertised on social media, with promo codes on select Meta ads. Follow the event pages on social media, as well as the railway that you’re visiting. There are usually $5 off promo codes available online, but it takes some time to look. Ticket proceeds support preserving the Great Historical Railroads!

Is Day Out With Thomas Worth The Price?
Overall, I thought our tickets as a family of six were worth it. The whole family truly enjoyed the event, and ours was a rainy day. I think nice weather would’ve enhanced the event even more. I like how it’s tailored to the kids, but the train ride is enjoyable for parents, too. Where it gets pricey is the merchandise tent. All train ride guests depart for the merchandise tent, and your kids will see toys they want. Be prepared to pay extra for toys, on top of your event tickets.
