Once the heart of Georgia’s gold rush, Villa Rica is still a hidden gem. Today, the gold you come by are unforgettable family memories. Just west of Atlanta, this charming town invites you to pan for real gold at the Pine Mountain Gold Museum, ride a vintage train through scenic trails, and walk the historic downtown area. With hands-on history, kid-friendly eats, and outdoor adventures, Villa Rica is a city you don’t want to bypass.

The highlight of Villa Rica is the gold, but it’s also full of modern experiences that make it stand out. After a morning at the museum, stroll through the restored historic downtown, where you’ll find family‑friendly restaurants and shops. In the afternoon, head to parks like Gold Dust Park or Clinton Nature Preserve with playgrounds, scenic lakes, hiking trails, and picnic areas for a relaxing golden-hour experience.
1. Learn at the Pine Mountain Gold Museum

Villa Rica is the perfect half day drive from Atlanta and offers educational fun for children at the Pine Mountain Gold Museum. No matter what your kid’s ages are, there’s not a bad time to visit the museum. On the surface, the museum looks like a little roadside stop, but it’s full of family fun, neat artifacts and history that kids can digest.
Pine Mountain, where the museum is located, was one of the original mining locations during the rush. Gold is still found today, in the mountain, and museum brings the area’s rich history to life through their exhibits.
Go at your own pace while touring the museum, but there’s plenty for the kids to enjoy. The tour starts with a 16-minute video of the history of Georgia’s gold rush days and then guests walk through the remainder of the museum exhibits – including a bee keeping area (with local Pine Mountain bees).
2. Pan For Gold at The Pine Mountain Gold Museum

Feel like the real prospectors did in the 1800s, at the Pine Mountain Gold Museum. Kids and adults alike can try their hand at panning for real gold and gemstones. It’s a hands-on, splashy adventure where you’ll swirl dirt in a pan and watch shiny treasures appear. Whether you strike it rich or just get your hands wet, it’s a fun, educational experience that brings Georgia’s gold rush history to life for the whole family.
The gem mining is instructed and kids will certainly find some great gem pieces to take home. Mining is weather-dependent, so keep that in mind when planning your Villa Rica visit. Mining is an additional fee to museum admission.
3. Ride the Train at The Pine Mountain Gold Museum

A family must-do at the museum is a ride on the Golden Nugget #310! The Pine Mountain Gold Museum train ride is fantastic for younger kids and it’s a short 10-minute ride. This open-air train glides past historic mining ruins and gentle hillside trails, offering a relaxed way to take in the natural beauty and gold rush heritage of the area.
Seasonal events turn the train ride into something even more memorable. During Halloween, the Ghost Train ride is family-friendly and not scary during the day, then transforms to spooky after dark. Over twenty actors play parts for the nighttime Halloween ride to ensure that your heart is racing.
Fun behind-the-scenes fact: The Pine Mountain Gold Museum has so many Christmas lights that they’re actually installed before Halloween. The lights are hidden from guests during the Ghost Train, but the team is busy prepping for the holiday season starting in early fall.
After Thanksgiving, the train reveals the festive overlay for the Winter Wonderland train rides with twinkling lights and characters. Guests meet Christmas characters, snack on seasonal treats and enjoy holiday music. It’s a great way to get into the holiday spirit and kids under two are free.
Both of the seasonal Pine Mountain Gold Museum train rides are very popular and sell out quickly! Due to popularity, the Winter Wonderland Train Ride offers a few time slots in the New Year, too.

With its tree-lined sidewalks, historic architecture, and locally owned shops and restaurants, it’s easy to explore on foot. Grab a treat, as a family, and take in the character of century-old storefronts. The downtown Villa Rice murals are perfect backdrops for family photos.
