7 Best Wilmington NC Attractions For Kids

Last Updated on June 22, 2026 by Kimberly Stroh

Overlooking the Cape Fear River, Wilmington, North Carolina, is a charming city that welcomes families. The city’s historic district is pedestrian-friendly, and the blend of museums, history, and nature ensures that there’s something for kids of all ages. I took my three kids, ages 5, 9, and 12, to find all the fun Wilmington has to offer. Even with our wide age gap among our kids, Wilmington delivered.

My Favorite Family-Friendly Hotels in Wilmington

  • The Cove Riverwalk Villas: Stay in a houseboat on the Cape Fear River for the best views, with all the amenities families need.
  • Holiday Inn Resort Lumina: If you want to stay on the beach and drive to downtown attractions, the Holiday Inn Lumina is a family-friendly resort with an indoor and outdoor pool.
  • Hotel Lela Wilmington: For a hotel with kids’ entertainment and a great pool, the Hotel Lela wins. Plus, it’s between downtown and the beach for an easy drive to either.

1. Take a Self-Guided Tour of the Battleship North Carolina

Touring the battleship North Carolina
The Battleship North Carolina stands tall over Wilmington, North Carolina.

The Battleship North Carolina is one of Wilmington’s most iconic attractions and a fascinating stop for kids who love history, ships, and adventure. Docked across the river from downtown Wilmington, this World War II battleship offers a self-guided tour that allows families to explore at their own pace.

Kids can climb ladders, walk through the crew’s living quarters, peek into the massive gun turrets, and discover what life was like for the sailors who served aboard. Interactive exhibits and hands-on exploration make history come alive, turning a visit into an unforgettable educational experience for children and adults alike.

Pro Tip: The Battleship North Carolina isn’t easily accessible and isn’t air-conditioned. We went with my mother, who is in great health for her 70s, but still struggled to climb the stairs.

2. Cruise The Cape Fear River On a Boat Tour

Kids love looking out at the river, on board a Wilmington Boat Tours cruise.

There’s nothing quite as iconic as cruising the Cape Fear River to see a new perspective of the city: floating on the water. The Wilmington Boat Tours company is the only locally-owned cruise tour operator in the city and offers specialty cruises as well as daily options.

We took the daily Eagles Island tour, and my kids were enamored with the storytelling and facts told by the first mate. It’s a 50-minute cruise, which is the perfect amount of time for kids, plus the boat has a full bar for drinks, making it a win-win.

3. Test Your Skills at iFLY Wilmington

Indoor skydiving at IFLY Wilmington
Kids can experience indoor skydiving at iFLY Wilmington.

There are multiple iFLY locations across the U.S., but the Wilmington location is the only one that offers more than just skydiving. Paired with a certified instructor, kids can feel what it’s like to skydive in an indoor skydiving wind tunnel. Prior experense isn’t necessary and kids over five can participate with parent’s release. My kids were smiling ear-to-ear after their skydiving.

Amp up the adrenaline even more by scheduling a session in their Conflict Kinetics range. The Wilmington iFLY location is the non-military location where anyone can experience this digital tactical range. As a mom, I appreciate how the instructor enforced standard safety practices, even though they’re green gas arms. Practice cognitive drills, target drills, and even escape from zombies.

ProTip: Reserve your indoor skydiving and Conflict Kinetics experiences online before visiting.

4. Find Locomotive History at the Wilmington Railroad Museum

Learn about the history of the Atlantic Coast Line at the Wilmington Railroad Museum.

The Wilmington Railroad Museum is a must-visit attraction for train-loving kids and families. Located in the heart of downtown Wilmington, the museum showcases the city’s rich railroad history through engaging exhibits, vintage railcars, and interactive displays. The oldest artifact dates back to the late 1800’s.

Children will especially enjoy the hands-on play area featuring train tables and a model railroad that brings miniature trains to life. We watched volunteers bring the magic of model trains to life. Outside, families can climb aboard a real caboose and explore historic railroad equipment, making it easy for kids to imagine what train travel was like in years past. It’s an educational attraction that combines history, play, and plenty of opportunities for curious young explorers.

5. Let Toddlers Play at the Children’s Museum of Wilmington

The tiniest explorers can play at The Children’s Museum of Wilmington. With a dedicated safe toddler area, an art room, and STEM-centered exhibits, the museum encourages creative and educational playtime. The museum is designed to spark creativity, curiosity, and hands-on learning for young visitors.

Children can climb aboard a pirate ship, create masterpieces in the art studio, experiment with STEM activities, play in a pretend grocery store, and engage in exhibits that promote problem-solving and discovery. With activities geared toward a variety of ages, it’s an ideal indoor attraction for families that need a rainy-day activity or an escape from the heat.

6. Admire & Play Amongst The Blooms At Arlie Gardens

Of all the Wilmington NC attractions, Arlie Gardens was equally as fun for my kids and me. Airlie Gardens offers families a beautiful outdoor escape where kids can connect with nature while exploring more than 67 acres of scenic gardens, walking paths, and wildlife habitats.

Children will love spotting turtles, butterflies, birds, and colorful flowers as they wander through the grounds. Highlights include the famous 500-year-old Airlie Oak, peaceful freshwater lakes, and seasonal blooms that transform the landscape throughout the year. My kids love the butterfly house!

With plenty of open space to explore and opportunities to learn about local plants and ecosystems, Airlie Gardens is a relaxing and educational attraction that the whole family can enjoy.

7. See The Historic District On a Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride

Downtown Wilmington Horse-drawn Carriage Tours
Explore the historic charm of downtown Wilmington on a horse-drawn carriage ride.

A horse-drawn carriage tour, from Springbrook Farms, is a memorable way for families to experience Wilmington’s historic downtown district. As the carriage rolls past centuries-old homes, charming churches, and cobblestone streets, guides share entertaining stories about the city’s history, architecture, and colorful past.

Kids enjoy riding behind the gentle horses (and taking their photo with them afterward) while taking in the sights from a unique perspective. The relaxed pace makes it easy for families to soak up Wilmington’s Southern charm, and it’s a fun way to learn about the city’s heritage without spending hours on foot.
