As a mom of three, I love long trips to Walt Disney World, where we can spread out an itinerary and take our time. Yet, as a self-proclaimed Disney-obsessed person, I also need a quick fix of Disney magic sometimes. I’m here to tell you the long trip is always the better option, but it’s possible to fly to Walt Disney World and back in one day! Here are my best tips for planning a 1-day trip from Atlanta to Walt Disney World without a resort room. You’ll be asleep in your own bed by night.

When To Plan a One-Day Walt Disney World Trip
Hopefully, if you’re even considering this, you’re a tad Disney-obsessed too. I can think of many reasons why a one-day Disney World Trip is a great option. Go to a special event, pick up limited-edition merchandise (that popcorn bucket you saw on social media), take advantage of Annual Passholder perks, or experience something that doesn’t require a long trip. Our trip was specifically for Tri-Circle-D Ranch. I recommend having a purpose and plan that you organize your day trip around! This isn’t the trip for wandering.
How An Atlanta To Walt Disney World Trip Actually Works

Location is key for a one-day Walt Disney World trip. The Atlanta Airport is a 1.5-hour flight to the Orlando Airport. Flying is the safer (and quicker) option because driving home after a full day at Disney isn’t smart when you’re exhausted. If you live somewhere where the flight is less than 2.5 hours, it’s very doable to fly to WDW and fly back home on the same day.
Rope Drop to Fireworks: Maximizing Every Minute
Have a plan of attack. Decide what you want to do on your trip. On our day trip, we focused on Tri-Circle-D Ranch and Disney Springs. Rideshare services can transport you from MCO to the front gate of a park, or take Mears to any Disney resort.
Utilize the My Disney Experience app for time-saving functions: placing quick-service meals from your phone or using the Lightning Lane. Time is limited. I recommend quick-service dining options over table service and paying for quicker lines via Lightning Lane. You’re saving money with no resort stay, right? It’s a great excuse to save time with Lightning Lane.
When To Avoid a One-Day Disney World Trip

Do not plan a single-day trip for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, Disney Jollywood Nights, or Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. I love these special park events, but they start at 4 pm and end around midnight. Logistically, it’s not feasible to attend one of these events and go home in a one-day trip. Take advantage of those tickets by planning a full overnight multi-day Walt Disney World vacation. Trust me.
Travel Logistics To Consider For A One-Day Disney Trip:
- Take the earliest flight out as possible (we picked a 6 am flight).
- Take advantage of TSA Pre-Check status.
- Reserve your transportation from MCO to WDW.
- Consider upgrading your flight for a backup plan (due to inclement weather)
- Save time in the parks by skipping long lines, using quick-service meals, and passing on parades where you have to sit to reserve a spot. Time is precious.
- Pay to ship home souvenirs, make purchases that are small or can be worn.
- Download apps to monitor airport security line times.
- Your flight should be one of the last flights back for the day (ours was 9 pm).
How To Plan For The Unexpected
No matter how much planning you put into your one-day Disney trip, there are things out of your control, like the weather. We knew that weather delays were a possibility. Upgrade plane tickets for flexible options and have a backup plan in case you’re stuck at Walt Disney World. The plan is to come home on the same day, but even the best plans can go awry.
Luckily, the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport is actually in the airport and serves stranded passengers well. Yes, a one-day trip saves money, but please ensure you have funds to implement a backup plan (especially during hurricane season). Of course, booking a Disney Resort directly from the My Disney Experience app is an option, too.
Packing Tips For One Day at Walt Disney World

To go from Atlanta to Walt Disney World, our Frontier Airlines flight departed at 6 am, and we upgraded one ticket to include a backpack. Don’t pack a suitcase. Use a comfortable backpack to be worn all day long. Pack extra underwear and a toothbrush with toothpaste just in case you’re stranded. I also packed a small medicine bag of essentials and electronic chargers. Since there’s no hotel room, charge your tech whenever you take a break, like waiting at the airline gate or dining. A crossbody and a backpack were all we needed for our day trip.
Is a One-Day Disney Trip Worth It for Families?
I can say, without doubt, that only adults should attempt to fly from Atlanta to Walt Disney World (and back) in one day. It’s exhausting, and kids deserve a trip that isn’t under time constraints. My husband and I traveled without our three kids, but brought home a few souvenirs for them. Disney adults are the travelers who should make a one-day Disney trip.
It’s happily exhausting and definitely a must-do at least once. We left the house at 3 am and walked back in the doors shortly before midnight. We put in (almost) a 24-hour travel day, but made memories to last a lifetime as a couple. Are we crazy? Maybe—crazy for Walt Disney World magic.
