I watched the little girl’s eyes go wide as a massive float glided past, its performers tossing strands of shimmering beads directly into her tiny outstretched hands. Music pulsed through the evening air, dancers twirled in brilliant costumes, and all around us, families cheered and celebrated without a single parent nervously scanning for threats or inappropriate behavior. This was Mardi Gras — real, authentic, exhilarating Mardi Gras — but it wasn’t in New Orleans.

While I don’t have kids yet, I’ve always romanticized the idea of taking my family to experience Mardi Gras on its home turf. But the reality of navigating Bourbon Street with kids through overwhelming crowds and adult-oriented chaos always gave me pause. Then, I discovered Universal Orlando’s Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval Festival (February 7-April 4), and I realized something: families don’t need to compromise. Universal has recreated everything magical about Mardi Gras while eliminating just about anything that makes parents nervous.
A Parade That Actually Works for Families

The parade at Universal Orlando isn’t some watered-down theme park version of Mardi Gras — it’s a genuinely spectacular production that rivals some of the best in New Orleans. The floats are massive, intricately designed masterpieces featuring traditional Mardi Gras themes alongside international carnaval celebrations. Professional performers dance, wave, and engage with the crowd.
The bead-catching itself is pure joy for kids. Performers make eye contact, aim for little hands, and create genuine moments of connection. The little girl next to me caught more beads in one Universal parade than most adults manage during an entire New Orleans Mardi Gras weekend.
For families wanting to up the ante, Universal offers a Mardi Gras Float Ride and Dine Experience, an exclusive opportunity that simply doesn’t exist in New Orleans. Guests can actually ride on one of the parade floats, tossing beads to the crowd below just like the professional performers. The experience includes a behind-the-scenes warehouse tour, where you can see the floats up close, learn about their construction, and appreciate the artistry involved. Combined with a themed dinner, it transforms spectators into participants in a way that makes kids feel like absolute VIPs.
Entertainment That Keeps Everyone Happy

Beyond the parade, Universal transforms the park into a full-scale Mardi Gras celebration. A live concert lineup features major headliners like Ziggy Marley, Barenaked Ladies, and The All-American Rejects performing on a massive outdoor stage. Street performers, jazz musicians, and stilt walkers roamed the park at dusk, creating spontaneous moments of Mardi Gras magic.
What impressed me most was the integration. This isn’t a separate ticketed event. Families can ride Harry Potter attractions in the afternoon, grab dinner at the festival’s international food booths, catch the parade at 7 PM, and still have time for a nighttime ride on The Hulk.
The entertainment is also predictable in the best way. You know when performances start and what to expect. There’s no wandering through unfamiliar neighborhoods hoping to stumble upon something kid-appropriate.
Authentic Foodie Experiences For All Ages

Universal has really upped its culinary game in the last few years, and Mardi Gras is no exception. The International Flavors of Carnaval aspect of the festival features nearly a dozen booths representing countries that celebrate Carnaval worldwide, most with a live-fire cooking aspect that transforms eating into an authentic, interactive experience.
During our visit, we got to sample everything from wood-fired salmon drizzled with chimichurri, sweet-and-spicy beef skewers, and shrimp ceviche walking nachos — trust me, the ceviche is a sleeper hit. But the real MVP of the event was the desserts. The king cake and beignets are natural showstoppers, and the coconut flancochos (a flan-coconut cake hybrid) was a delightful surprise. The foods pack plenty of flavor without being too much for little palates.
The Peace of Mind Factor

Let’s be honest about what makes New Orleans Mardi Gras challenging for families: hotel prices skyrocket, accommodations in safe areas become scarce, and massive crowds create constant stress.
Universal eliminates that anxiety. On-park accommodations, like retro-themed Cabana Bay Beach Resort and The Aventura tower, are plentiful, with shuttles that regularly run between the hotels and the parks. The environment is controlled, secure, and designed with families in mind. Bathrooms are clean and plentiful. Security is visible. The crowds are manageable and theme-park-appropriate.
Try navigating New Orleans’ French Quarter with a stroller during Mardi Gras, then compare that to Universal’s wide, paved walkways and ample seating areas. Only one scenario lets you actually enjoy the celebration.
The Bottom Line
I’m not saying New Orleans doesn’t have its magic; it absolutely does. But for families with kids in tow who want to experience authentic Mardi Gras energy, Universal Orlando delivers everything you’re looking for without the compromises. The parades are spectacular, the entertainment is professional and family-friendly, the environment is safe and comfortable, and the overall experience lets parents actually relax and enjoy the celebration alongside their kids.
Universal’s Mardi Gras is perfect for families with children of any age, from toddlers mesmerized by colorful floats to teenagers who appreciate the live concerts and international food scene. Why settle for worrying about whether your family can handle New Orleans when you can have Mardi Gras magic, theme park thrills, and genuine peace of mind all in one trip? Now, that’s actually having it all.
