Columbus City Mills Hotel Review
As soon as you step inside of the boutique hotel, you’re immersed in the history. Original brick walls contrast against the metal accents of today’s construction. Look down at your feet, and you’ll see furry friends are just as much of a welcomed guest as you are – with a box of dog toys. Honoring the past and offering amenities guests love, the City Mills Hotel wowed me from many angles.
The History of City Mills Columbus
Several Columbus groups came together to preserve the history of the City Mills building, and they strived to bring new life to it. The building was built in 1828 as a small water-powered gristmill on the Chattahoochee River.
For the next 50 years, the property went through several improvements. In 1869, Horace King was contracted to build a new wooden structure known as the “corn mill.” It was the only building until 1890, when the City Mills Company was born. That year, a brick building was constructed with a wooden grain elevator, and the building became a flour mill.
Cornmeal and flour were produced from City Mills until the 1960s in addition to providing electricity for the neighboring residents. In the 1980’s, all production of grain ceased. The building sat until 2015, when investors wanted to preserve the history.
Today, City Mills is Columbus’ first boutique hotel. The building reflects its history while offering an exciting respite for travelers who crave unique lodging.
City Mills Hotel: A Wellness Haven
A cut above the competition, City Mills has so much more to offer travelers than a spot to rest their heads. One of the biggest highlights is the location to The Chattahoochee Riverwalk. Step just outside the hotel, and you’re standing on The Riverwalk, which is a 15-mile linear park alongside the river’s edge. The Riverwalk’s location is perfect if you’re bringing the dog.
Wellness junkies will also appreciate the proximity of the River Flow Yoga and Wellness studio, which is on the ground floor of the hotel. Wake up and find your zen before sunrise. If you’re craving cardio, hotel guests have access to the local YMCA as well.
Guest Rooms Designed For Views + Amenities
Most rooms at City Mills come with incredible views of the Chattahoochee River. Custom furniture, artwork by local artists, and metal accents showcase the culmination of community artists, architects, and historians.
My room felt cozy with the brick walls and open design. The boutique hotel offers an array of different accommodations – from loft bed floorplans to riverfront rooms with a balcony.
Wake up to a warm breakfast that’s included with your stay – including traditional biscuits and gravy – and end the day with light snacks, bottled water, and sodas. It’s a refreshing welcome back after a long day of touring in the Georgia heat.
If you’re traveling with your dog, book a pet-friendly room. All of the dog-friendly rooms are complete with a dog bowl. There’s no size limit listed on the City Mills Hotel site.
Look for special discounted military, government, and AAA rates when booking your room.
