I love race days. They are the finale of my hard work and training. Races are one of the many reasons I run and probably one of the most important ones. As much as I love them, race weekends aren’t a weekly occurrence for me.
I have a “1 race per month” rule. As a Mother and runner, race mornings take a lot more group effort than they did before kids. Somebody has to watch JP and feed him breakfast while I’m gone. Then entertain him all morning long. Sometimes I’m even missing out on family activities to race instead.
It’s not unusual for me to answer a phone call, while running, so my husband can reassure that JP is ok. I’m sure runners cringe when they see me talking on the phone while running (whatever). They also wish me luck too!
I have found that 1 race per month is truly a compromise for my husband and I. I pick the race that will give me the best chance of a PR and hope for the best.
Now– racecations are a different story all together. We all know my favorite racecation is a Run Disney race, but they aren’t happening once a month! Thank God it’s not even a possibility.
My racecations can cost between $1,000 – $6,000 per trip. So I keep them few and far between. Typically, I take 1-2 racecations per year. I’ll either go with my husband or friends. They aren’t the most kid-friendly trips, so I leave JP at home.
That seems to be what works for me, as a runner. But I know some bloggers who consistently run 1-2 race every weekend! Kudos to them, but it’ll never be in the cards for me.
