Nutrition is a key as a runner, but even more importantly as a busy Mother and runner. All day long, I’m busy taking care of my two boys, working from home and training for upcoming races. My nutrition is far from perfect, but I’ve become a grocery store expert at stocking up on healthy foods. For me eating a well balanced diet starts at the store. Publix is my one-stop shop for our weekly grocery needs. These 5 Grocery Shopping Tips for a Runner’s Diet will help you make smart purchases, stay fueled and give you energy for your training.

Make Your Grocery Budget Work
I know it’s hard to eat healthy when you’re on a tight budget. My grocery shopping supports my training, plus provides meals for our family. Every week, Publix offers BOGO’s and new digital coupons. I stock up on pantry essentials whenever they go on sale. Seeds and nuts, with essential fatty acids, are great for runners. Eating a diet with ample plant seeds has been shown to improve health and help maintain a healthier body weight – perfect for a runner’s diet. Check online weekly for the latest savings.
When you’re making your grocery list, research meals that are designed for runners. Recipes that provide key nutrients for endurance will help you eat a healthy runner’s diet. Pinterest is a plethora of recipes and a great resource. Online running publications, like Runner’s World, are another favorite resource of mine.
Shop the Store Perimeter
The bulk of your healthy shopping should be around the store’s perimeter. Whole grains, fresh produce, meats and dairy are all located at the perimeter of the store. Avoid packaged and processed items located in the center of the store. Eating fruits and veggies supplies your body with vitamins, minerals, and the carbs it needs to fuel your running. I aim to eat “the rainbow” each day.
Purchase Dairy for Recovery
Dairy products offer a large amount of protein which helps speed recovery. One of my favorite snacks, yogurt, provides live active cultures which are believed to improve your immune system. Many runners also prefer chocolate milk as a recovery drink. It offers protein, quick carbs and calcium. Always check the dates of your dairy before purchasing and grab the freshest available.
Try to pay attention to how products are made and their source. Purchasing USDA Organic helps to eliminate GMO’s and pesticides. Publix Greenwise products are made with a higher standard:

That’s something you can feel good about buying! I don’t buy all organic, but I try to purchase Greenwise meats and produce from Publix. Not only is it helping me make smart choices as a runner, but it makes me feel good as a Mom.
