Now is the perfect time to take a Fall day trip and venture away from home for a little. It’s a great way to experience the crisp fresh air and changing leaf colors. You can take a foliage tour, visit a state park or take the kids to a Fall festival. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just exploring your state for the first time, Fall is an awesome time to go on a quick getaway. Here are some ideas to help you start planning and some considerations.
Do Some Research
Use the internet to find out what’s happening! Look at Chamber of commerce websites, Facebook events and or rating websites like Yelp. Think about festivals, restaurants or state park events that might be taking place.
Follow the Foliage
Pick a route that is outside of the city. I love driving up to North Georgia, from Atlanta, and venturing into the mountains. Travel and Leisure has a list about the “Best Fall Foliage Drives” in the U.S. Beautiful Autumn foliage is a must-see for a day trip this time of the year.
Don’t Forget About Meals
It’s easy to forget about meals when you’re touring a new area. You don’t want to get stuck, especially with kids, not knowing where to go. Do some research to find out where to stop along your drive. I like to use lunch time for a bathroom break and resting to eat.
Find a Maze
Another fun destination, is a corn maze. Kids love to visit corn mazes and teens love haunted corn mazes. They pop up all over the place this time of the year.
Enjoy the Harvest
Right now is the perfect time for pumpkin and apple picking. State farm bureau and agriculture websites offer a list of farms with links to their websites. Research what type of harvest they are offering and if it’s “u-pick”.
Sample Some Wine
Vineyards are beautiful this time of the year. The cooler weather makes it an excellent time to tour a vineyard with a Sommelier and sample the wine.
Plan a Picnic
If you found a state park destination, plan to bring a picnic for the family. You can hike to find a special spot and bring some yummy snacks. The cooler weather eliminates the problem of bugs, so you can sit back and enjoy the scenery.
Take Family Photos
Now is the best time to plan ahead for that perfect holiday photo! Bring a camera and coordinate everyone’s attire. The Fall foliage is a stunning back drop for family photos.
