The Mandalorian: Worth Watching As A Non Star Wars Fan?

Last Updated on June 30, 2021 by Kimberly Stroh

Disney Plus just made it’s famed mid-November debut and Disney fans are finally able to watch the new original series that made their first appearance last summer at D23. As you fire up Disney Plus and you’re getting ready to stream the latest offerings, should you even bother watching The Mandalorian if you are a non Star Wars fan? This spoiler-free review is for the folks who want to love Star Wars, but aren’t die-hard fans. Or maybe you’re like me and jumped into Star Wars when The Force Awakens debuted – so missed out on the original back stories.

The Mandalorian: Worth Watching As A Non Star Wars Fan?

First off, you have to understand what a “Bounty Hunter” is and who were the original Star Wars Bounty Hunters before “The Mandalorian” – that would be Boba Fett and Jango. Bounty hunters were hired guns or mercenaries who made their living hunting down and capturing assigned targets.

Just like any Star Wars film, you have to figure out when “The Mandalorian” is set in the timeline, compared to other Star Wars films. The series is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. Therefore, that might make it immediately confusing to non Star Wars fans.

I feel like that’s one of the biggest struggles with trying to jump in and become a Star Wars fan. You might want to watch the Star Wars movies in order.

What Non Star Wars Fans Can Appreciate About The Mandalorian

While the storyline, within the Star Wars timeline, can be difficult to follow, there are so many other entertaining aspects that make it worthwhile. Lucasfilm and Executive Producer, Jon Favreau, do an excellent job to bring a beautiful set design with CGI effects and a stellar cast.

We’re going to keep this review spoiler-free, but I can promise you that there is a cliffhanger at the end of the first show that even I could understand as a “non Star Wars fan.” Many die-hard fans watched the season premiere multiple times to make sure they didn’t miss anything. So there are definitely some Star Wars “Easter eggs” scattered throughout.

The Violence In The Series Isn’t For Kids

If you’re introducing your kids to the Star Wars universe, I’m not sure this is the way to do it. “The Mandalorian” is scattered with some violence that you’d definitely expect to see from a Bounty Hunter. While it is done a typical Star Wars fashion that isn’t gory, it’s still not appropriate for young kids. Watch the series with your Tweens and Teens for sure.

A Star Studded Cast That Shines

As previously mentioned, Disney Plus did a great job with the series and who they casted. You’ll recognize A-list names like Taika Waititi, Nick Nolte and Pedro Pascal. The cast makes you feel like you’re in the theater, watching a movie, rather than on the couch streaming a new series.

I hope that as the series unfolds, we’ll get to see a bigger storyline develop that even us non Star Wars fans can appreciate. Even though I may not totally understand the timeline or appreciate the character’s rich past, I’ll keep tuning in to watch this Disney Plus series. Who knows – it might even make me a fan girl.
