Spring Butterfly Craft For Kids: Toilet Paper Roll Crafts

When the weather warms up and we’re preparing for arrival of spring, I like to make some crafts with the kids. It’s a fun way to celebrate! This Spring Butterfly Craft For Kids is perfect for ages 7+.

You can be creative as you want and let the kids create their own design. It’s also a budget-friendly craft because most of the supplies you probably already have at home or you can pick up at a dollar store.

These are cute as decor, you can hang them with fishing line from a classroom ceiling or they are great as napkin holders as well.

I picked spring colors to work with, but you can substitute any color or tissue paper that you’d like to use. If you’re not a fan of glitter, or you’re making this with a younger child, let them color the toilet paper roll.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Clear Contact Paper
  • Toilet Paper Roll
  • Tissue Paper
  • Modge Podge (Classic)
  • Piper Cleaner
  • Scotch Tape

How To Make The Spring Butterfly Craft For Kids:

Place your toilet paper roll over the contact paper. Using a pencil, draw one side of your wings. Think of two ovals stacked on top of each other – doesn’t have to be perfect.

Fold it in half and use scissors to cut your wings. By folding it in half, that ensures both sides are identical. It’s just one solid piece with both side of wings.

Peel back the contact paper so the sticky side is up. Use tissue paper to decorate the wings. You can use scraps of different colors, a solid tissue paper color or a pattern tissue paper. Be creative!

Place more contact paper on top of the butterfly wings to seal it. Cut out the wing shape one more time, so that way it’s stacked like: contact paper, tissue paper and contact paper.

Use Modge Podge and cover the toilet paper roll, front and back. Cover with glitter and let dry. You can always add more if you need to. I do this over a placemat for easy clean up!

Cut slits on both sides of the glittered toilet paper roll and slide your butterfly wings into place.

Cut 1.5 inches of pipe cleaners and fold over your finger to achieve the antenna look. Carefully use clear tape to secure on the inside of the toilet paper roll.
