Social media has been abuzz with rumors about Run Disney changes. Most of the rumors are circling around the Wine & Dine Half Marathon.
As Run Disney’s only nighttime race now, it’s been a popular sell-out race with registration closing in under 30 minutes last year. I ran last year’s race, which ended up being shortened due to weather. In 2014, rain poured down on runners for the entire 13.1 miles. I’m starting to believe it’s a cursed race.
With 2015 being the final year of the Osbourne’s Light Spectacular, runners were left wondering if there would be a new highlight on this course. Most of Hollywood Studios is under construction for Star Wars attractions, so they need a new draw.
The rumor: add a 10k and make it a challenge. This formula seems to work for Run Disney too. It attracts runners looking for more than a 5k and runners wanting to receive a challenge medal for 6.2 extra miles.
Yet, Run Disney has dragged their feet about any anouncement, regardless if the “challenge” rumor is true or not. They pushed registration back 1 week, yesterday morning then 2 weeks by yesterday afternoon! Side note: Avengers registration was pushed back as well.
Run Disney seems to be scrambling to update the Wine & Dine Half Weekend somehow. Hopefully the extra 2 weeks allows them to add something spectacular, because honestly- it was my least favorite Run Disney experience so far. The Epcot Food & Wine Festival is worth a trip with or without a race.
I’m sure the race will still sell out quickly, especially if they add a challenge. I did like the Jingle Jungle 5k being on the same day as the half, it would be interesting to see how they add a 10k. To read about my 2015 Wine & Dine experience, click here.
Even though this is all speculation as of now, most Run Disney rumors have a string of truth in them… Like Paris.
