Georgia Famous Pan Fried Onion Dip Recipe (A Southern Classic)

When we moved to Atlanta, I discovered the rich and soulful traditions of southern cuisine. The South just knows how to make food taste better. Living in Georgia means that Vidalia Onions are abundant and cheap. Whenever I’ve got an abundance of onions, I whip up this Pan Fried Onion Dip recipe. It’s a delicious appetizer dip that’s so easy to make. Everyone enjoys the depth of the flavor and it doesn’t require much effort at all.

This dip is creamy and rich, served chilled. Hands down, it beats any dip that you can buy in the store. It’s been one of my go-to appetizer recipes because guests always enjoy it. You can add a bit of heat to the dip as well, depending on how much red pepper you want to use. I keep it mild and just add a pinch of red pepper – but that’s up to you!

How To Make This Southern Pan Fried Onion Dip Recipe

You’re going to need a food processor to make this onion dip, but a blender is another great substitute too. You start by working over the stove top, transfer to the food processor and into the refrigerator before serving. By keeping the pan fried onion dip in the refrigerator before serving, it’s going to thicken and the flavors will mesh together even more.

What To Serve With Pan Fried Onion Dip

The classic pairing to onion dip is traditional potato chips. However, I’ve also used tortilla chips and mini twist pretzels when I’ve been in a pinch – they’re just as great. I also like to add some fresh vegetables for color, if I’m serving it at a party. Sliced celery sticks and mini carrots are the BEST with it.

How To Store Leftover Onion Dip

If you’ve got leftover onion dip, you’ll want to transfer it to an air-tight container. It needs to be kept in the refrigerator to stay fresh, since it’s got dairy in it. It will be good for 5-7 days, in your refrigerator. Do not freeze onion dip, as it won’t thaw well.

What You’ll Need From The Grocery Store:

  • Large Vidalia or Yellow Onions
  • Butter
  • Kosher Salt
  • Ground Red Pepper
  • Black Pepper
  • Cream Cheese
  • Sour Cream
  • Mayonnaise

Step-By-Step Directions To Make Pan Fried Onion Dip

To Start, you’ll need to chop your onions. Cut the onions in half and then slice them into 1/8-inch thick half-rounds. In a large sauce pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions, ground red pepper, salt, and pepper and sauté until onions are caramelized, stirring occasionally.
