You’d think running wouldn’t be exciting– just one foot in front of the other. But there are times when things unexpectedly happen that you can’t control. I’ve heard many runners confess their embarrassing stories, from chafing to tripping. The time has come for me to confess mine!
I always prep for an awesome race and go over every detail the night before. For the most part, it serves me well and I have a race without incident. But this past May, I gave a group of runners behind me a good laugh during one particular race.
The Tear Drop Half Marathon in Chatsworth, GA has a route that goes through a state park. It’s a gorgeous (yet painful) downhill run from a mountain top. Mid race I noticed a slight jabbing sensation on the side of my breast. Initially, I ignored it and kept focus on my pace because, ya know, this was my “big PR race” (spoil alert– it wasn’t).
Turns out, the underwire from my sportsbra was poking out. “How the hell did I miss that last night?” I asked myself.
That slight jabbing pain became more and more irritating with each passing mile. So I decided to do something about it. I reached between my boobs and pull the underwire out. That part wasn’t so bad. It’s what I did after. I threw it into the bushes and kept moving on. That was a BIG deal. The runners behind me witnessed it and kindly reminded me I litered in a state park. They laughed and we kept racing. I’m glad they didn’t report me!
I whole-heartlessly forgot that I was in a state park. It was a little embarrassing to say the least. I didn’t know so many runners behind me were paying attention. Next time, I’m checking every tiny detail of my wardrobe to prevent any malfunctions. But it’s a story I’ll never forget and still makes me blush with a smile.
