Last Saturday was the official kickoff for JG 13.1 training, here in Atlanta. Jeff Galloway’s half marathon weekend is in mid December (see details below) and the training started this past weekend. Even though it’s the “dog days” of Summer, it’s time to lace up our shoes for Winter races!
I had the pleasure of joining these runners for their first half marathon training run. We all met at Jeff Galloway’s store, Phidippides, in Atlanta, for some encouraging words of advice from Jeff Galloway himself. Jeff explained why his method of adding walk breaks is so important for runners to keep your risk of injury down. Jeff Galloway perfected his method, over 40 years ago, on Atlanta runners who were training for the Peachtree Road Race. He discovered that our orthopedic units break down if we don’t utilize walk breaks while running.
Before we embarked on our first group run, we split into smaller groups based upon run/walk intervals. I joined the 90:30 interval group, which meant I ran for 1 1/2 minutes before taking a 30 second walk break. Each group was lead by an experienced Jeff Galloway coach.
As we ran, runners shared why they picked the Galloway method as their preferred training method. One runner had experienced several taxing injuries before finally realizing her body needed walk intervals. Another runner had some impressive finishing times by using the Galloway method without experiencing any injuries. Many of our group members were training for JG 13.1 to be their first half marathon. Jeff Galloway mentioned before the run that we’d start bonding over our training runs and it was clear that friendships were already forming.
Once we returned from the training run, we chatted over coffee and checked out the swag from last year’s half marathon. Everybody seemed very excited and motivated to begin training.
Phidippides will host the weekly training run each Saturday leading up to the December race. Trainees are encouraged to run 30 minute training runs on their own during the week as part of Jeff Galloway’s plan. The cost for the half marathon training program is $95 for new members and $75 for alum and to join the full marathon program it’s $159 for new members and $99 for alum.
