I Have Something to Admit…
It’s something I need to get off my chest NOW.
I don’t watch the Olympics.
I hate to say that, but I have my reasons why.

It’s not that I’m not interested in the sports, athletes or their stories. First off, the Olympics will air at odd times. I wish I could sit around all day or stay up all night to watch, but I just don’t have that luxury. When you do try to watch an event, it seems like it takes forever before your favorite athlete or country competes.
What’s up with all of the commercials too? It’s like 50 minutes of commercials for 10 minutes of actual broadcasting of the Olympics. I may be exaggerating, but that’s how it feels. I will admit though, the commercials rival the Super Bowls’s commercials. The Rogue One trailer was a highlight (that’s a whole different blog post).
But guess what? I saw the Rogue One trailer online! Not while watching the Olympics. With everything posted to the internet in real time, I don’t need to spend hours watching TV. I can pick up the highlights from the Olympics online. THIS Buzzfeed story about the Men’s Olympic Divers surely caught my attention. Social media even adds to that! Facebook made a huge mistake announcing that the US Women’s Gymnastics team won gold before most people had a chance to watch their recording of it.

Yep, everything is on Facebook now. ©NBC
I love that the Olympics brings out the patriotic side in all of us, but watching it on TV seems so passé when we can catch all of the highlights on the Internet. I’ve loved the stories that the athletes shared, the drama behind the Olympics and my favorite part is hearing about an athlete overcoming hardships to win.
So while I’m a supporter of the Olympics happening, it feels good to admit that I don’t watch it. I might have some guilt over that since I see all of my running friends tuning in. I’m just watching in my own way. GO USA!
Tell me, have you been watching the 2016 Summer Olympics? What has been your favorite highlight?
