How to Support a Runner- When You Don’t Run

Last Updated on October 19, 2016 by Kimberly Stroh

With so many huge fall races, like the New York City Marathon, I have family and friends ask me how to show a loved one, who runs, support and admiration. Whether it’s the first time they are toeing the start line or their first marathon, there are many ways to tell them you’re proud.

This post is for all of the people who want to show their runner some love! If you’re the runner, pass it along and drop a (not-so-subtle) hint.

How to Support a Runner

Let Them Train

Runners oftentimes have to put themselves first when training for a big race. If they are parents, caregivers or work long hours, it’s so hard to put the time aside for proper training. Give your runner some guilt-free time to run. You can watch the kids for a long run or pass on that late Friday night. I promise they’ll appreciate the time to train!

Listen, Even If You Can’t Relate

Runner’s will talk about every run, be it good or bad. They’ll spew off random information about their pace, aches and use weird words like “fartleks”. It doesn’t matter if you have no clue what they mean, just be the listening ear they need. My Husband is the first person I call after a race or even during a race, if I need a morale booster.

Lace up Sometimes

If you want to take it a step further (pun intended), lace up and show some love by joining them on a run. You can keep your runner company by walking a cool down mile or run them into the finish line. Being shoulder to shoulder with a loved one while running feels so comforting. Can’t run? Bike next to them.

Be a Spectator

Every race is important to a runner, even if they claim it’s “just a training” run. Show up to a race and spectate on the sidelines. Create a poster and cheer as your runner passes. Be there for a hug at the finish line and capture the moment with a photo. They’ll be thankful for your presence.

Commemorate the Special Moments

Runners live for the post-run celebration. It’s what we think about during that last tough mile and the reason why we sign up for more races. Treat your runner to a special post-race carb filled meal or a keepsake gift. If you haven’t noticed from bumper stickers, runners love anything with distance on them! That corny 26.2 mug on Amazon? They’d love it.

Runners are just crazy people who can go from point A to point B faster than most people. Show them some love and support, even if you just don’t understand. They’ll appreciate the effort more than you’ll ever know!

Tell me! How do you tell a loved one that you’re proud?

I love this! My aunt is a runner (two half marathons, two full marathons and a half-Iron Man down!) and I never know how to show my support besides being there and cheering her on! These are great tips!

These are nice ways to support a runner. I'm glad I can support someone because I definitely don't run lol.

These are really sweet. Showing support doesn't have to take much of your efforts, it's really just being there for the person like your tips here! It would give them the determination and encouragement that they need to succeed!

This post is everything. I have a lot of friends who aren't runners and they don't understand my struggle. I'm sharing this post.

I'm a new parent, and I just went on my first run after an almost year hiatus this morning! I'll have to share this with my husband to get him to watch the baby so I can run more, heheh. Finding the time with a newborn is intense!
