Back to School: Tips for Starting a Healthy Year

I can’t believe that we’re only a few weeks away from going back to school! It seems like Summer passes by quicker each year. I know kids love the anticipation of the first day. Every kid has a new backpack and a bright smile to match. Moms have a lot on their plate though, to prepare for the new school year. Getting back into the daily grind can be tough on the whole family. Between the back to school shopping and the teacher meetings, make sure the family’s health isn’t overlooked.

Now is a great time to prepare the kids for their healthiest school year yet! I’ve got some simple tips to ensure your kid spends more time in the classroom instead of the doctor’s office.

Tips for a Healthy Back to School

Sleep: Kids love Summer because they are allowed to stay up later, but those early school day mornings will quickly catch up. Start adjusting their sleep patterns now by going to bed an hour earlier and waking up earlier. The adjustment period will help them wake up easier when the time comes.
Get to the Doctor: It’s time for that yearly check up! You can discuss any required medications, athletes can get a physical and ensure records are up to date for the school. Even ask about a daily vitamin before cold and flu season. Sometimes one doctor visit can save you multiple trips back in the future.
Eat a Rainbow: Stressing proper nutrition will be easier to start before your kid is back to school. You can introduce some new healthy lunch options and see what they like. If you have them “eat a rainbow” of colors, they’ll naturally consume more fruits and veggies. By taking the initiative to encourage healthy habits, you’ll help contribute to their success in school.
Check the Weather: Many parts of the country are starting the school year during the Summer heat. Between waiting for the bus, recess and after school sports, the kids will be in the sun more than we’d think. Make sure to pack a water bottle for your child to stay hydrated throughout the day. It’s also smart to apply a layer of sunscreen in the mornings. I like the spray sunscreens for a quick application. Just look for one that’s sweat proof.
Be BackPack Smart: The weight of kid’s backpacks can cause too much pressure on their joints. Shop for a rolling backpack or one with padded shoulders. Anything to disperse the weight will help them.
Get the Whole Family Involved: Let the kid’s back to school schedule be the reason you get a fresh healthy start too! Recommit to your exercise program, write down some new goals and set a great example.

I am so lucky that both my kids seem to pass out once they hit the pillow. My oldest has such a hard time remembering to drink water throughout the day.
