Our family is all about Nerf or Nothin’ and we’re having fun with Nerf Fest this month! Nerf Fest happens every summer and celebrates the brand with the hashtag #NerfNation. Since my kids love Nerf so much, I created a fun backyard party with these easy DIY Nerf Targets that the kids can make themselves.
How To Set Your Backyard Nerf Party
Everything you need to throw together a Nerf party can be found at your local grocery stores. Nerf even has your furry friends covered with a variety of durable dog toys. I’m calling that a win for the whole family.
I put together this backyard party with some of our favorite Nerf product picks from Nerf Fest, homemade snack mix, and some pre-made cupcakes from the bakery section. Best of all? you can even pick up the DIY Nerf Targets supplies during the same grocery store trip. Our neighborhood kids had a blast crafting these targets and then playing with the different Nerf products.
The Best Nerf Products For DIY Nerf Targets
Even our pup got into the action for Nerf Fest! I’m prepared for an ambush at any given moment now that we’ve brought home some AWESOME new toys. Here are some of our favorite Nerf product picks:
These are fun because they’re unexpected, compact and perfect for little hands! Nerf blasters,
from Hasbro, deliver the ultimate in blaster performance for Nerf battles. Start blasting almost anywhere, anytime with the micro-sized Nerf N-Strike NanoFire blasters! As a mom, I appreciate that they only fire one dart at a time (that means less darts to keep track of).
The Nerf Mega Bulldog blaster is part of the AccuStrike Series that features darts designed for greater accuracy. I love that it offers a storage spot for 3 darts on the side. My youngest definitely felt like a Bulldog on the battlefield with this fun toy!
You know what’s hot with kids right now? Zombies! Make sure your survival kit includes the Nerf Zombie Strike Survival System Nailbiter blaster. The blaster’s 8-dart clip automatically indexes to the next dart and stays attached to the blaster. The Nailbiter blaster is designed with fun details that reflect the Zombie Strike story of survivors who are creating battle gear with parts they scrounge from different places.
NERF DOG 30IN VORTEX CHAIN TUG
The Nerf Dog 30in Vortex Chain Tug will entertain your dog for hours on end! Play “tug of war” with your best friend, or enjoy an action-packed session of toss and retrieve. You can really see and feel the durability of the Nerf dog products too!
How To Make Your DIY Nerf Targets
The kids can make these on their own with little help from a parent. I think the DIY Nerf Targets are great for grade school kids or older to make on their own. Of course, feel free to use whatever colors your kids like best! I’ve made the targets many different colors for my kids.
What Materials You’ll Need:
- Glue Stick or Tacky Glue
- Large Blue Paper Party Plates
- Medium Orange Paper Party Plates
- Blue Cardstock
- Orange Plastic Party Cups
- Scissors
- Circular Template (Anything with a small circle base will do – l used a hot sauce bottle)
- Pencil
To start making your DIY Nerf Targets, use your pencil to trace small circles on your blue cardstock. These will be the center of your target, so cut out one for each number of targets you’re making. Glue it to the center of the orange plate.
Next, glue the orange plate to the center of the large blue plate. Secure the target on the front of an orange plastic party cup, using a generous amount of glue. Press and hold firmly until the glue sets.
You can place your targets on stairs, railing or even just a table. The Nerf possibilities and fun are endless! We gave each one of our targets a different point value. Whoever got to 100 points first won the Nerf battle. Every kid got to pick their own toy too!
I love teaching my kids to shoot the targets instead of each other. They actually learn about some skill too. These DIY Nerf Targets will keep the kids entertained for hours and they’re so much for a summer Nerf party!

This is genius. The targets are a much better idea than my kids using artwork, lampshades, or the fly on the window, as target practice! I think I will surprise them with this over the weekend!!
