Special thank you to Disney – my family was given complimentary passes to preview Disney Pixar’s COCO. All opinions are my own. All photos ©Disney.
Discover the culture and heritage behind the Mexican holiday, Dia de Los Muertos, in Disney Pixar’s COCO. The movie follows the coming of age story of a young boy named Miguel. It’s a celebration of life and ancestry that culminates with the love of family. This Thanksgiving, COCO is the perfect reason to grab the whole family and spend some time together. Just remember to bring the tissues!
Disney Pixar’s COCO Storyline
The COCO Plot:
Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.
I love that Miguel takes us on an adventure of self-discovery. He isn’t afraid to follow his passions as he takes on Ernesto’s advice to “Seize Your Moment“. COCO is all about family and that’s the most heart-warming part. Miguel finds himself in a power struggle with family and his actions take him to the Land of the Dead. There, he meets the past generations of his family.
It’s a relatable story about family, growing up and loving music. When you aren’t afraid to pursue your passions, that’s where the unknown lies. In the end, COCO reminds us that family is most important and to “forgive but never forget“.
The Music and Animation
The songs of COCO are rooted in Latina culture and are woven throughout the film. Both female and male voice talents lend a hand in the creation of the film’s music. The most jaw-dropping visuals come from Pixar’s Land of the Dead depiction. From a single flower petal to an entire city that can only come from the innovative minds of animators, the visual effects are simply stunning.
Will the Kids Love it?
Absolutely. Whether or not you think the storyline might be too advanced, take them to see it. Kids understand the value and importance of family and that’s the thread that ties the entire movie together. They’ll also love Dante, Miguel’s sidekick and dog, who provides comedic relief without saying a word.
Why I Loved it
As much as I’ve loved the recent sequels that feature classic Pixar characters, it was time for an original storyline. We finally got some fresh characters. It was fun to meet new characters and watch their personalities unfold throughout the movie.
You can truly tell that there was so much love, time and talent poured into COCO. It’s a keeper and one that I can’t wait to watch again and again with my own family.
