Summer is my least favorite season as a runner. It’s so hot and humid that it often forces me to spend more time on my treadmill than outside. Summer brings my favorite running season though– Fall! I’ve got so many awesome races planned for the Fall, that I can’t slack off during the Summer because of the heat. Running doesn’t come easily to me. As soon as I start skipping training runs, I immediately notice the difference. So I’ll turn to the treadmill over the next few months.
Since my treadmill and I will be BFF’s this Summer- here’s how I’m beating any treadmill boredom:
1- Progression Runs
I will try to run a little faster each mile, to end up with negative splits. I’ll run each mile about 10-15 seconds faster to ensure a hard progression workout.
2-Speed Play (aka Fartleks)
I will walk or jog then add sprints. Sometimes I will sprint during the chorus of a song. Other times, I will sprint during commercials if I am watching TV.
3-Play With Incline
I’ll start playing with incline after a nice warm up. I’ll add 5% each minute until 5 minutes have passed and then lower to the beginning incline. Then I’ll build on that to go even higher on the next 5 minute interval.
Pinterest is full of treadmill workouts! Find a few that you love, then print them off and make a binder. I’ve even got my favorite workouts laminated and I keep them near the treadmill. That way I’ll always have a nice copy that won’t be ruined with water spots.
5-Cover That Screen
When I have no desire to be on the treadmill any longer, I will put a towel over the screen. Then I’ll focus on something else, like watching TV. Before I know it, I’ve pulled out an extra mile that I wasn’t sure existed.
Do you have any treadmill workouts that you depend on?
