It’s another Sunday, which means we are back to the weekly grind of grocery shopping and meal prep. Last week, I shared my best tips for meal preparation on a budget. Part of being on a tight budget means that I always buy foods that can multi-task for me and the whole family enjoys. I’ve found that bananas are a fantastic staple to keep in our house.
They quickly replace sugar post workouts, offer potassium and are easy to tote around. They even help aid in digestion too. Bananas are like the original “fast food”. It’s no secret that runners LOVE bananas for all of these reasons.
But other than eating normally, here are some awesome hacks for bananas:
1- Keep bananas lasting longer
If you wrap the tips of bananas in plastic wrap, they’ll last 3-5 days longer.2-Freeze your leftover bananas
If you bought too many bananas, you can freeze them for future use. Be sure to take off the peel before storing in your freezer. Frozen bananas are great for smoothies or making your own healthy “ice cream”.3- Use bananas to bake with
Ripe bananas are a fantastic substitute for heavy & fattening oils. They add moisture to your breads, cookies & cakes without adding fat.4- Bananas can be ripened quickly
If you are craving the baked goods mentioned above but don’t have any ripe bananas, you can make your own. Just place bananas on a lined cookie sheet, peel on, and bake at 350 for 40 minutes.5-Bananas are amazing on the grill
Most people don’t realize how versatile bananas are. You can even throw them on the grill for dessert. Just slice horizontally & place on the grill. Then add honey or cinnamon once they are softened & serve.
