7 Fall Road Trip Destinations Worth Driving The Extra Miles For

The Best Fall Road Trip Destinations

The following post is sponsored by Toco Warranty, but all opinions are my own. Savvy Mama Lifestyle is a Brand Ambassador representing Toco Warranty.

As the weather starts to change and the cool autumn air hits the leaves, there’s no better time to hit the road. Scenic road trips to see the foliage change, pick pumpkins and go hiking, is one of our family’s favorite seasonal activities.

I find that the roads are quieter during the fall season because, unlike summer, fewer people are traveling. It might inspire you to see the New England leaves that are bursting with color or catch the first blanket of snow that hits the Black Hills of South Dakota.

7 Fall Road Trip Destinations

Blue Ridge Parkway

Known as one of America’s most beautiful drives, the Blue Ridge Parkway connects the Smoky Mountain National Park in North Carolina to the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. You’ll drive alongside beautiful mountainsides with breathtaking views. The weather will definitely be cool, with little chance of snow. Keep your eyes peeled for black bears and other wildlife that live in the park areas.

Toco Tip: Drive slowly on the bumpy mountain terrain and avoid uneven roads as much as possible. Your coil springs have a higher likelihood of getting damaged in the wintertime.

Pacific Coast Highway

If you’ve ever been to the West Coast, you’ve probably heard of “PCH,” which follows the coastline of the Pacific Ocean from Interstate 5 south of San Juan Capistrano to U.S. 101 in Leggett in Mendocino County. It’s one of the most iconic drives in the country and tourists flock to PCH, “put the top down” and see the California coastline. Be sure to stop at Big Sur, Hearst Castle and Malibu for some off-road adventures as well.

Michigan’s Gold Coast

You may not think of the MidWest as a great destination for a coastal drive, but the northeastern shores of Lake Michigan are beautiful in the fall. The foliage ranges from lush, green pines, firs, and spruce trees to maple and oak trees. The Gold Coast is full of quaint fishing towns and apple farms. Pack a picnic and enjoy a day outdoors with this drive.

Toco Tip: Make sure your headlights and taillights are working properly. The fall season means less daylight and depending more on your headlights and taillights, especially in the northern U.S.

Vermont’s Route 100

During the summer, Vermont offers rolling green hills as far as the eye can see. As soon as the cold air hits, there’s a beautiful blanket of fall color that takes over the entire state. Scenic Route 100 runs from Waterbury to Stowe, with many great stops along the way. There’s many small maple businesses alongside the road which offer fresh samples. A family-friendly spot is the Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory. If you want to spend the night, soak up the Sound Of Music history at the Von Trapp Family Lodge.

Toco Tip: Make sure your wiper blades are switched out if they haven’t been. Wiper blades are supposed to be changed out every 6 months, and Vermont tends to have some cloudy and wet weather during the fall season.

Lake Tahoe Area

Between Nevada and California lies one of the world’s most clear lakes. It’s also one of the deepest lakes in the country! Lake Tahoe is beautiful all year round, but the ski resorts come alive during the fall season. It’s a great weekend getaway destination with plenty of “by the road” stops to explore.

Toco Tip: If it’s time, change your battery. If not, carry jumper cables. In colder weather, your battery’s capacity is reduced, which ultimately means your battery must work harder for your car to start.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Snow covered peaks start to top the Rocky Mountains during the fall season. The mountain roads located in the Rocky Mountain National Park area will definitely take you to new heights for scenic views. Keep your eyes open for moose, mountain goats and bears. Don’t miss the golden treetops that surround the posh city of Aspen, Colorado.

Toco Tip: Check your tires before venturing on your favorite of these fall road trip destinations. The rocky terrain and high altitude can be dangerous if your tires are run down.

Gulf Coast’s Route 98

From western Mississippi to Southern Florida, road-trippers can enjoy the Gulf of Mexico coastline on Route 98. Fall is a great time of year to enjoy the forests, marshlands and white sand beaches along this drive. It’s a much cooler time of year, which allows for the windows rolled down while enjoying the drive. Just be sure to check for any active Gulf of Mexico hurricanes before planning this one.
