The newly re-imagined 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer has a sleek and bold design that sets it apart from the competition. While it’s strikingly fresh design catches your eye, you’ve really got to get behind the wheel for the full experience. Even a quick glance inside isn’t enough to see everything that the Trailblazer has to offer. I’m breaking down the SUV’s biggest highlights and why it should be a contender for your next family vehicle.
If you’re familiar with my “mom” automotive reviews, you’ll notice that I’m oftentimes taking test drives in more open areas, outside of the city. I wanted to mix it up, and put the Trailblazer to the test, with more a “daily driver” feel in the city. Put together heavy Atlanta traffic, two hyper kids in the backseat and unfamiliar streets – that was our test drive.
When an SUV can save me from my own stress, look good while doing so AND get amazing city gas mileage – it’s a winner in my book.
2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer “Mom” Review For Families
What catches your eye first when you look at the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer? It might be the sporty and modern look, with the two-tone roof, or (my favorite) the geometric chrome rims. There’s so much more than the snazzy exterior though. For starters, the $19,995 starting price is unbelievable for a subcompact crossover. Plus, for that price, you have room for your crew and cargo for anywhere your family needs to go.
Reminiscent Of The Past With Updates For Today
The first thing that I had to look up was the history of the Chevy Trailblazer. The 2021 Trailblazer is completely new to the market, but the name was last used in 2009, by Chevy, for a much larger SUV. They took the name and several features to completely redesign an entirely new compact SUV for today’s market. The end of result of this design overhaul is a vehicle that families can appreciate from road tripping to city life. In brand’s SUV lineup, it falls between the Chevrolet Trax and the Chevrolet Blazer – just for reference.
2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer Fuel Economy Specs
I’m instantly impressed when any SUV gets great fuel mileage. We had one weekend and a full tank of gas to explore the city of Atlanta with kids. I expected our daily drives from the northern suburbs into the congested city to chew through the gas tank in a hurry. Much to my surprise, we failed at using the entire tank, after we purposely tried to blow through it.
The front-wheel drive models are going to be your most efficient, which has ratings of 29 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. Respectively, upgrading to all-wheel drive reduces those numbers to 26 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined. The efficiency speaks for itself when you get behind the wheel and see the energy conservation.
Cargo Room + Space For Your Crew In The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer
One of my favorite rear seat tests is having two full size adults, of different sizes, sit between our two carseats (not at the same time). Of course, there’s plenty of room for two adults anytime – but fitting one adult between two carseats is an entirely different story. My Husband, being over 6 feet tall, immediately noticed the amount of leg room he had. The best-in-class leg room even allowed me to easily install both carseats while 7 months pregnant (because we all know installing carseats has the effort equivalent to running a 5k).
Behind the rear seat, there’s space for whatever your life needs in the cargo bay. The 40/60 2nd row rear seats fold down to allow for 54.4 cu. ft of cargo volume. You can access the maximum cargo length of 8.5 ft when you fold down the front passenger seat – that’s great for your weekend warrior hardware store projects.
Driver Assist Features Designed For All Levels
I’m still at home with my young little ones, but they will leave the nest eventually. With such an amazing price tag, the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer is an attractive vehicle for emerging young drivers. Parents can admire the price, but they’ll love the Driver Assistance features.
Chevrolet equips every Trailblazer with a set of basic driver-assistance features, known as the Chevy Safety Assist. It’s standard on all trim levels, and includes the following:

- Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
- Forward Collision Alert
- Front Pedestrian Braking
- Following Distance Indicator
- Intellibeam
- Teen Driver Technology
- Rear Seat Reminder
- Rear Vision Camera
2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer Connectivity And Infotainment
Drivers can decide between the 7-inch infotainment screen, which is standard, versus the 8-inch infotainment screen as an upgraded option. You can connect up to two bluetooth devices at the same time, when you opt for the technology package, which makes entertainment even easier for families.
As a driver, I always appreciate the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration which allows me to use my favorite navigation apps and stay connected safely on-the-go. Chevrolet was my first experience with in vehicle WiFi and road trips haven’t been the same since. I love connecting to the 4G WiFi when we’re on the road. It allows me to work while my Husband drives and the kids can stream movies.
Overall, I was most impressed with the Trailblazer fuel economy and cargo space. Those are two key components to consider when you’re shopping for an SUV. Families want to invest in a vehicle that can take them from the city, withstand road trip mileage and everything in-between. Surprisingly, with it’s smaller footprint, the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer will meet those needs.
